Life on the Creek!

The sound of bird song is often the only thing we hear when paddling through the peaceful salt marshes of Ayers Creek.  One of the more vocal residents of the marsh is the Salt Marsh Sparrow. Somewhat elusive he is can be hard to spot, but we frequently hear his soft but distinct song.  The salt marsh sparrow's song is soft and wheezy with a bit of a buzz that stands out among the other bird calls along the marsh.

The Salt Marsh Sparrow thrives on the abundant insects, spiders, and marine invertebrates throughout the marsh. While still quite common along the marshes of the East Coast this little bird is considered vulnerable and their populations are impacted by development.

Listen closely the next time you paddle Ayers Creek and you are sure to hear the song of the Salt Marsh Sparrow.

Check out The Cornell Lab or Ornithology to learn more and listen to the song of this beautiful little song bird.

Camp Kayak Adventure

We are once again partnering with the Ocean Pines Association to offer Camp Kayak Adventure, a full day of fun, paddling, and hands on science for ages 10 and up.  The camp is being offered on Friday June 26th and Friday July 24th and includes:

  • Games and activities on land and water.
  • Learn basic kayak paddling techniques and principles of water safety.
  • Discover the diversity of Maryland wildlife both above and below the water.
  • Explore the coastal marshes by kayak and observe shore birds, bald eagles, herons and egrets.
  • Help man the 14' seining net and use dip nets to discover underwater creatures such as grass shrimp, blue crabs, newly spawned flounder, menhaden and more.
