Life on the Creek!

August is a beautiful time on the creek as many varieties of fragrant wild flowers are in bloom and the tasty wild blackberries are at their peak.

The marsh hibiscus is in full bloom this week and it is beautiful.  It's white blooms are adding a brilliant touch of color along the creek.

This hardy wetland perennial ranges from Texas to the Atlantic and extends northward to southern Ontario. The blooms range in color from pure white to deep rose and have a dark burgundy center. The blooms along Ayers Creek are primarily white.

The marsh hibiscus goes by many names including Marsh Mallow and Swamp Rose. Local folklore indicates the name Marsh Mallow refers to the white blossoms resembling marshmallows dotting the edge of the creek.

However the confection, marshmallow, actually derives its name from the original Marsh Mallow plant, which is closely related to the Marsh Hibiscus. The roots of the plant were a key ingredient in the original marshmallow confection and have been used in confections dating back to ancient Egypt.

No matter what you call it, the marsh hibiscus is a beautiful treat for the eyes that we enjoy on our late July and early August paddles.

Full Moon Paddles

Don't miss out on our August Full Moon Paddles. Join us for an enchanted evening paddle followed by a bon-fire with wine, cheese, and desserts. Sunday night has the added bonus of being an Extra Super Full Moon.  The supermoon occurs when the moon becomes full on the same days as its perigee, which is the point in the moon's orbit when it is closest to Earth.

The supermoon of August is one of the largest and brightest full moons of the year according to the U.S. Naval Observatory.

Paddle out to watch the sun set over Trappe Creek and paddle back by the light of the full moon to enjoy local wines and sumptuous desserts around the bonfire. Plan to arrive by 6:30 PM. Reservations required.

Full Moon Paddle Dates:

August 9th and 10th

For more info check out our Full Moon Web Page.
