Life on the Creek!
The Double Breasted Cormorant is a coastal seabird identified by its dark black feathers with bright patches of red, yellow, or orange colored skin on the sides of its faces. These birds are remarkable fishers and known for a characteristic folded-wing dive, which allows for a more streamlined entrance into the water. Cormorant use their webbed feet to propel themselves once submerged, and have been recorded diving up to 45 meters below the surface. Cormorants eat small water organisms including eels, fish, shrimp, and water snakes. After diving, the Cormorant assumes a spread wing position to facilitate the drying of its wet feathers. Cormorants generally travel, roost and feed in groups. Cormorants settle in large colonies during breeding season and build nests out of sticks, twigs, feathers and bark - as well as more unusual things like trash, pebbles, and parts of other birds. Predators to Cormorants include larger birds of prey like Bald Eagles and Great Horned Owls, as well as climbing animals like Raccoons and Foxes. |
