Life on the Creek!
The Willet is a coastal shorebird often spotted near the tidal mudflats located on Ayers Creek. It's unique piercing call and white band running down its wing makes it unmistakable. The Willet nests in the well-hidden coastal marshes and is often seen along Assateague and Ocean City beaches feeding on crustaceans, marine worms and insects with its thick, straight bill. During the breeding season both parents incubate the eggs, but at night only the male sits on the nest. When predators lurk, Willet will fake a broken wing to lure them away from the nest. The Willet's population decreased significantly in the late 19th century due to over hunting as they were considered an excellent and tasty food. But the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 banned market hunting which facilitated their comeback. Today decreasing habitat, primarily coastal marsh losses, once again threatens this infamous shorebird. |
