Job Search Advice from The Experts

Over 300 job seekers attended our Job Connection Event held on May 14, 2014 at the Oak Park JCC.  Thirty employers talked to attendees about their job openings at the Job Fair. Employment Specialists from JVS and MichiganWorks! answered questions and reviewed resumes at Ask the Experts, and attendees learned about many valuable Community Resources.

The morning began with the Employer Forum, where representatives from four major employers in metro Detroit shared tips for job search success.  Here are a few choice suggestions from the wonderful guidance they provided!

• Start each day being thankful and you will set the tone for a positive outlook all day.

• Hiring managers look for people who reflect the values of their organization, such as a willingness to help others, integrity, and reliability.

• Be very aware of what is going on around you, an unexpected connection or clue might lead you to your next job.

• Let everyone in your community know that you are looking for work and always be prepared to walk into an interview or meet a new professional contact.

• The first impression you make is critical so make it great!  The recruiter decides within two minutes of an interview whether or not you are a good candidate.

• Make sure that you answer the question that is asked.  Listen carefully and reply clearly. 

• Be enthusiastic, bright, happy, positive, and energetic.  Have a good handshake and a smile.  And don't forget that thank you note!
