5 Simple Steps for Job Fair Success

1. Know Your Skills

Our skills are the things we know how to do. They are separate from the places we've worked and the job titles we've had-they are the things we accomplished at each job. Before speaking to anyone regarding the type of work you are looking for, know the skills you wish to use at your future job. This will help you not only be able to identify what types of jobs you want and what companies you wish to work for, but it will also give you confidence when speaking with employers about what you have to offer.

2. Do Your Homework

Being able to identify the companies you wish to speak with prior to attending a job fair will help you use your time both efficiently and effectively. You will typically find the list of companies attending on the job fair's website. Employers will expect that you know something about their company, so do your research and be prepared.

3. Network

If you approach a job fair like a networking event, you will benefit from building relationships with employers and fellow job seekers. Remember, you never know where your next job will come from, so meeting as many people and building and sustaining as many professional relationships as possible will assist you in your search.

4. Sell Yourself

Some call it an elevator pitch, but basically, you need to know who you are, what you do and where you've done it and be prepared to give examples of how you do what you do.

5. Follow Up

Nothing will come of the contacts you make at a job fair if you don't follow up, so make sure you have some way to connect to each person you speak with before ending conversations. Ask to connect to them on LinkedIn or get their email or business card. Sending a simple thank you will go a long way.
