Resume Resolutions for 2014

Updating your resume is a great way to start the New Year.

Here are five tips.

1. Create a master resume.

Include everything you have ever done from leading Girl Scouts to managing a recycling program in your neighborhood. Document every class or session of professional training or certification too.

2. Commit to writing targeted resumes for every job. One size does NOT fit all.

Pick and choose items from the master resume to create a targeted resume that "matches" a job posting.

3. Have references, but don't put them on your resume.
They belong on a separate document. Have an updated list ready at all times, and ensure that all contact information is accurate by checking references regularly.

4. Use headings to your best advantage.
If the job involves teaching, use the heading, "Teaching Experience" and highlight your most relevant jobs. Headings such as Employment History do not add value, interest, or clarity to your resume.

5. Use numbers to quantify your achievements.

Monetize your contributions. Put numbers in your bullet points to make your resume stand out.
