Non-Verbal Communication in an Interview

OR: Body Language Speaks Volumes

As the saying goes it not only what you say it's how you say it. Your behavior in a job interview tells the employer as much about you as does your responses to questions.

Here are a few tips to relay confidence in your non-verbal communication in the interview.

  1. No dead fish handshake. Have a firm handshake when you first meet the interviewer and at the end of the interview.
  2. Maintain good eye contact throughout the interview. Looking at the interviewer shows the employer that you are interested in what they are saying. Looking away tells them you'd rather be somewhere else.
  3. Sit upright in the interview. No slouching. Good posture conveys professionalism and confidence.
  4. Use a normal tone of voice so that the interviewer is able to hear you. You can show enthusiasm and interest by varying your voice tone but it is never a good idea to speak very loudly or shout in the interview.
  5. Keeping your hands on your lap and gesturing naturally will make you appear relaxed, animated and interesting. Don't hold anything in your hands. This will prevent you from playing with, dropping or clicking a pen or other object which is distracting in an interview.
  6. Remember to smile. Smiling helps you to develop rapport in the interview and increases your likeability to the interviewer.
