10 Job Getting Tips
from the People Who Hire

On March 1, 2013, JVS held its twice yearly Employer Forum event. Job seekers heard a panel of area employers share insights from their side of the interviewing table

Here are ten solid tips from the many helpful suggestions offered.

  1. Treat everyone, including the gatekeeper, politely and professionally - always strive to be likable, enthusiastic and involved

  1. Show the right attitude for the job - how you behave is more important than what you say - act as you would in the position

  1. Research the company - know about the company's products, services, mission and even their involvement in the community

  1. Have a career focus and clear job targets - do not apply for everything at the company - you will likely be eliminated as a candidate

  1. Demonstrate a service mentality - show how you resolve problems, deliver exceptional customer service and make things easy for others

  1. Show and tell how you interact in groups and as a team player

  1. Be patiently persistent - tenacity is an asset - if at first you don't get hired, apply, apply again

  1. Prepare, prepare, prepare - in addition to knowing about the company and the job, be ready to answer questions about how you will help the company succeed through your own success

  1. Customize your resume to specific positions and the company - state you can do the job by describing how you have done what they require

  1. Give them your undivided attention - turn off your cell phone, maintain eye contact and do not chew gum

Employers hire

people with whom they get along,

who fit the team,

and who are of benefit to all.
