Don't Overdress

With Your Overcoat!

Michigan winters require heavy duty outerwear. Coats and boots are a necessity as are hats, scarves and gloves.

Outerwear belongs outside:

When you are interviewing, your body language speaks volumes.  Keeping a hat on and a heavy coat symbolizes protection: it looks like you are hiding or defensive. It is a visual barrier and possibly distraction.  People wonder why you are keeping your coat on. You don't want to be remembered as the "coat lady" or "the guy with the furry muffler," right? You will definitely not look comfortable all bundled up nor engaged in the matter at hand. You may even give the impression that you can't wait to leave the meeting or event.

  •  Instead of risking over-heating, find a coatroom when you enter a building. Hang up your coat with your gloves in the pockets and your scarf on the hanger. Put your boots in a bag near the coat. Change into shoes.  If there is no coatroom, keep your coat neatly folded over your arm.

Dressing professionally is one of the costs of working and especially job searching.

  • Job seekers always have to look the part whether they are attending a networking group, meeting for an informational interview, or a job interview. Just like we advise job candidates to avoid underdressing in the hot summer, we also recommend not overdressing in the winter.
