Managing Family Inquiries

at Holiday Gatherings

Well intentioned relatives can make the holidays hurtful for job seekers. In between requests to pass the mashed potatoes and gravy they feel compelled to ask about the job hunt.

Often, they offer trite advice like "did you check the Internet?"  The best response is short and positive: "Yes, I'm still hunting, and my focus is on the retail industry."

This answer lets them know that:

  • You are not taking a break for the holidays
  • You have a clear job target

Some really don't want to hear about your troubles. They might want to end the conversation as quickly as you do. Many relatives may sincerely want to help you. Let them! Here are some suggestions:

  • Clearly and concisely explain your job target: "I'd like to work as a legal assistant."
  • Wait for their response. More likely than not, they know a lawyer.
  • Ask them to introduce you to any contacts they mention by email or whatever method is most convenient for them.
  • Follow up with their suggestions and thank them profusely. They want to know that their efforts produced a result so keep them in the loop. Even if you found a good contact and not a job lead, let them know the outcome.

Job hunting has its own challenges and opportunities during the holidays.   JVS is here for you to help ensure you have the tools you need to get the job you want.
