Practice News:  Three Updates

HV fav doc We were pleasantly surprised to recently learn that our practice was recognized this month by Hudson Valley Parent Magazine with a "Favorite Docs & Healthcare Professionals" award!  The selection was based on parent feedback.

Also, please note that the office will:
-- close 1-2 hours early on Monday Dec 24

-- be closed on Tuesdays Dec 25 & Jan 1

Finally, beginning around January 3rd, Dr. Andrea Vianna, a veteran pediatrician with a rich background in integrative health, will be re-joining Bambini.  Several of you had a chance to meet her last year when she pinched in for us.  She'll generally be seeing patients Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Flu -- What Else Can You Do?

umcka Widespread flu activity has been reported in New York.  Certainly, we felt it in the office this last week.   All ages (parents included) seem to be affected.  Could a South African geranium be helpful to households that are about to be hit?

Perhaps so.  In fact, in a report from the Institute of Immunology in Luxembourg published earlier this year, EPs 7630 (a patented extract from this plant) showed dose-dependent anti-influenza activity at non-toxic concentrations against both pandemic H1N1 and seasonal H3N2.

Last month, researchers from Turkey reported that EPs 7630 may prevent asthma attacks in children with upper respiratory infections.  This is a big deal.  They enrolled 61 asthmatic children that were developing URIs.  Half got the extract, the others received a placebo.  Finding:  the EPs 7630 group had significantly fewer asthma attacks.

EPs 7630 is the active ingredient in Umcka Cold Care, which the Bambini Apothecary and a few neighborhood stores such as Stimpson's House of Nutrition, continue to stock.  (It's not available at pharmacies).

It comes either as a tincture (dosed in drops, but contains alcohol) or a liquid (dosed by teaspoon but contains  fructose).

An interesting feature is that it is a 1x homeopathic, which means it potentially has dual effects -- both herbal and homeopthic.

Headaches:  When to Worry?  What helps?

Integrated Health: Episode 4 After a short break, the Bambini video series has resumed.  This month, Rita Giordano PNP, who spent several years working at a local pediatric neurology practice, shares her insights into to the common causes of headache in children -- and also touches on some natural treatment options.  Tap image to launch video or click here.

Nosebleeds:  What Parents Need to Know

nosebleed

Rarely a week goes by this time of year that we fail to see a few children with recurrent nosebleeds.  A late night gusher can be unnerving for both parent and child.

Why is that?  What's the best way to stop a stubborn one?  And, perhaps most importantly, how can parents prevent recurrences.  Click here for our latest thoughts.

The CPR App
cpr
We give two thumbs up!

-- What's the first course of action with a choking infant?

-- Can you recall the optimal ratio of compressions to breaths when trying to revive a lifeless child?

Thankfully, pediatric emergencies don't come up too often, but that could result in a critical memory lapse in a life-threatening situation arises.

How can parents "stay on top of their game?"  The CPR App,  developed as a public service by the University of Washington and King County EMS, provides instant information on how to perform CPR and how to aid a choking victim.  Click here for details.  Add it to your smart phone and watch the 30 second videos every now and then.
