Statement of CMS President Mike Volz, MD, regarding U.S. Department of Justice Legal Action to Block Anthem-CIGNA and Aetna-Humana Mega-Mergers

"The legal action taken today by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) affirms our concerns expressed from the outset that the proposed mega-mergers of Anthem and CIGNA and Aetna and Humana would dangerously distort their influence on clinical decisions of physicians, jeopardize patient access, and ultimately raise, not lower, premiums. We applaud the Department of Justice for their thoughtful and thorough investigation and for allowing America's physicians and patients to have a voice in the process. We also recognize and thank Colorado Attorney General Cynthia Coffman for joining the DOJ in the action against Anthem and Cigna. Patients and physicians need insurance that works. We call on these four companies to abandon their efforts to further consolidate the industry and instead get back to work with physician organizations in a collaborative effort to find solutions to the health care problems facing Colorado and the nation."
