CMS launches new website with enhanced member features

The Colorado Medical Society is proud to announce the launch of our newly redesigned website that increases our online presence and adds a variety of member benefits. Highlights include a robust member portal for profile management; improved navigation; site-wide search functionality; full access to Colorado Medicine articles; educational webinars; an updated events calendar; an improved online physician directory; and access to society bylaws and policies in HTML.

CMS embarked on a redesign to help achieve its strategic goals, the most important of which is to ensure physicians thrive personally and professionally in the evolving health care system. The new site will allow for more focus on and accessibility of resources and tools, members-only content and benefits, and a comprehensive online physician directory for the public that reflects information you can update instantly.

All content on the site will be open to the public without the need for login credentials through the end of the month. In July, portions of the site will be designated as members-only content and CMS members will need a member login to access it. Look for your login information by mail later this month.

We will continue adding features to meet your needs. Coming later this year will be an online membership application and dues payment system. We hope you find the new site valuable. We encourage you to take a look by visiting www.cms.org.

Register for June 18 webinar: Physician performance reporting and the Colorado All Payer Claims Database

The era of big data in health care is here and Colorado has a new tool to help better understand what is and is not working. The creation of the Colorado All Payer Claims Database and the forthcoming release of physician performance reporting at the end of 2013 are major milestones for Colorado that physicians can utilize to improve health care value.

To help you understand what data is available now, what will be reported soon, and what this means for your practice and your patients, the Colorado Medical Society will host a free webinar featuring Jay Want, MD, chief medical officer of the Center for Improving Value in Health Care (CIVHC), and Jonathan Mathieu, PhD, CIVHC's Director of Data and Research. The webinar will be held Tuesday, June 18, 6-7 p.m. MDT.

AMA prescription for a healthier practice:
Protect your practice from inappropriate discounts

Physician practices need to carefully review health insurer explanations of benefits or electronic remittance advices to pinpoint and address underpayments based on inappropriate adjustments by the health insurer. The American Medical Association encourages you to review "Is your practice losing revenue through inappropriate health plan adjustments?" to make sure you aren't vulnerable. Click here to access it.

This is the latest tip in the AMA Practice Management Center's "Prescription for a healthier practice" series.

Final deadline for avoiding 2014 e-prescribing penalty is June 30

Starting in 2014, some physicians who fail to prescribe electronically will be subject to a 2 percent Medicare payment penalty. The penalty will be applied to individual eligible professionals or group practices participating in the Electronic Prescribing Group Practice Reporting Option (GPRO) who have not successfully submitted the target number of e-prescriptions based on their number of eligible providers.

There is one more reporting period during which individuals and groups can meet the reporting requirements and avoid the 2014 penalty: Jan. 1 - June 30, 2013. Note that those who successfully e-prescribed in 2012 do not need to meet this reporting requirement in 2013. Other exclusions can be found in the Electronic Prescribing (eRx) Incentive Program: 2014 Payment Adjustment Fact Sheet.

Physicians also can apply for hardship exemptions, which include: practicing in a rural area without sufficient high-speed Internet access; and being barred by local, state, or federal law from e-prescribing. The deadline for hardship exemption applications is also June 30. Click here to submit a hardship exemption.

New member benefit: DocbookMD

The Colorado Medical Society is proud to present a new, FREE member benefit, DocbookMD. DocbookMD is a HIPAA-compliant mobile app that allows physicians to send messages, text patient information, and exchange images such as X-Rays or EKGs over a secure mobile platform. It functions in a way that complements what we already do daily, but not in a way that adds work, wastes time, or burdens us with new systems.

Download DocbookMD from the Apple App store for iPhone, and iPad, or Google Play for Android devices. Go to docbookmd.com for more information.
