Yom H x 3, and a Y...
Yom HaShoah - Holocaust Remembrance Day
Yom HaZikaron - Israel Memorial Day
Yom HaAtzmaut - Israel Independence Day
Yom Yerushalayim - Jerusalem Day
It is no coincidence that these very significant observances fall one behind the other. Each of these is a day of observance for the Jewish community, and all are national holidays in the State of Israel. While the first two are somber reminders of the many heroic lives lost in efforts to protect Israel and the Jews, the latter two are joyous celebrations of the liberation of our land and our people. At Weizmann, our students are actively involved in learning about the significance of each of these important days.

Poetry Slam Brings Out the Best in Middle School
The middle school WEEL event on April 20, was a Poetry Slam -- a competition between two teams of middle school writers who celebrated National Poetry Month as they fulfilled language arts requirements. Some astounding poetry filled the air for an audience of second grade and fourth through eighth grade students, all of whom listened intently as they sat outside amidst the hum of bees and cries of the peacocks. Topics for the poems ranged from fantasy and philosophy to Batman and advice from animals.
The team who scored the most points was comprised of Alec W., Yitzchak B., Elliott N., Katie T., Allan L., and Maxx P. Top individual honors go to these poets whose poems reflected serious grappling with language and form: Yitzchak B., 8th grade; Elliott N. and Katie T., seventh grade; Shmuel B., sixth grade; and the combined writing of Adam L. and Quinn S., sixth grade.

Writing for Yom HaShoah
This semester, Weizmann's 7th and 8th grade students have been learning about the Holocaust. As part of these studies, the Remember Us Project -- a project of the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust -- provided each 7th/8th grader with the name of a child who was killed during the Holocaust before the age of Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Students received not only the assigned child's name, but also parents' names, town of origin, and age at death.

For Yom HaShoah, the 7th/8th grade students each wrote about his or her assigned child. They included the child's background information as well as what they would like to say to their assigned child and why they think it is important to remember people killed during the Holocaust. The students read their writings this morning in a moving ceremony that was attended by grades 5-8. A sample of the readings are attached; you may read all of them by visiting our website.

Today I'm remembering Yitzkhak Polak. His mother's name was Rivkah and his father's name was Avraham. He was born in the Transylvania region of Romania.
In 1944, Yitzkhak died in the Holocaust at the age of 7.
If I could say one thing to Yitzkhak I would say thank you, thank you for having thousands of people remember stories just like yours.
It's important to remember these people because put yourself in their shoes. The Nazis wanted to make the Jews extinct and no one would remember their story. We won and now we can remember their stories and remember what it was like in the camps.
By Yitzhak B., 8th grade

Today I am remembering Edith Mihaly. Edith was born on March 11, 1938. She lived in Bereguardo in Czechoslovakia with her mother, Serena and her father Abraham. Edith died in the Shoah at Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944. She was only 5 years old. She never got to grow up, go to school, or have a family of her own.
Her life was short and unfulfilled.
I'm sure Edith was a sweet child and if I had the opportunity, I would like to chat with her about her favorite games or activities and thank her for letting me remember her. It is important that we remember her and give respect to her. Sometimes I don't think that we appreciate how lucky and privileged we are to have the opportunity
to grow up and enjoy life.
By Katie T., 7th grade
