PTO's Petty Fundraising

It's another update from Paul Asimow, your petty fundraising czar!

(1)  Have you signed up for
WHY NOT? It's so easy...

(2)  Watch the Weizmann Day School facebook page for flash announcements of specials at
Sometimes amazing deals (like 20% rebates on Old Navy/Gap cards, for example) come up for just one day, and I'll be posting them there. If you also want to be e-mailed about such things, e-mail me at
and I will start a mailing list for Scrip loyalists. For your first order of electronic-delivery gift cards, you'll need to sign up at shopwithscrip.com
(enrollment code:  597D88AL268LL) and e-mail
me whenever you place an order.

(3)  If you have a secret stash of BoxTops for Education, consider this a reminder to get them out and bring them to the school office!

(4)  If you have things that you would consider consigning to the school for a benefit sale, but they aren't really yard-sale or silent auction items (high-value things, books, etc.), talk to Paul or e-mail
I'm happy to handle the eBay or amazon listing details and turn your basement-fillers into cash for the school...

Thanks for your support,  PAUL

Board Corner
What does the board do?
At this week's meeting, the board worked on our school mission and vision. The teachers have been helping a lot with this effort and have emphasized areas they hope to bring out in your students: creativity, curiosity, character, cooperation, compassion, and community. Look for the upcoming parent survey to lend your voice to how you see the school's identity and mission. We are proud of what the school does and we want to be able to say it clearly. In addition, the board organized into five standing committees that focus on key work. The five committees are: Development (which runs our Annual Fund and Generation's campaigns); Finance (which oversees the school's budget); Facilities (a new committee that will look not only at repairs but also long term building development); Marketing/Recruitment (that positions the image of the school to attract new students); and Strategic Planning (another new committee that will look at longer term [3-5 year] plans and maintain affordability). These committees report to the board but they are not limited to board members only. Interested parents and members of the Weizmann community can help with board committees. Please let us know if you have a strong interest in any of these groups.

The Development Committee in particular has been very active lately. We have only $8,850 left to reach our Annual Fund goal and balance the school's budget for the year. If you have already given at a level equal to or below a prior gift, consider this: ALL GIFTS ABOVE THE LEVEL OF A PRIOR GIFT WILL BE MATCHED for the first $10,000 thanks to a very generous gift. So if you gave less than before, please send in a second check to bring yourself up to the matching level. If you have not sent in your donation, please do so as soon as possible. The Annual Fund campaign closes on February 29 this year and we really need 100% parent participation. Board members will be calling you to remind you of the Annual Fund. Please let them know how you feel about the school and give generously.

We also have only $9,540 left to meet our last Generation's endowment goal and receive an additional $4,500 in matching grants. If you are part of any extended community such as scientists, film producers, puppeteers, popcorn chefs, etc, please speak with your friends about Weizmann. If they have children, or just want to support quality Jewish education, invite them on a tour. Check with the office for regular dates and times. We need everyone's help to make this goal a reality and continue to offer the best, affordable, Jewish education for all our children.
Thank you,
~ Lawrence L.

5th Grade Needs Drivers
Dear Parents,
In the spirit of continuing to build a partnership and community with our Astro Camp buddies, the fifth grade class from Beth Hillel Day School has invited our fifth grade class to go with them to Riley's Farm on Tuesday, March 15th. Riley's Farm is a fun and educational place that specializes in activities and programs for fifth graders. I am still getting the details, however, I know that we will be needing drivers. Riley's Farm is in Yucaipa, which is about an hour and a half drive each way. If you will be able to devote your day to this adventure, please let me know as soon as possible.
Thank you,
Amy Gabay

Middle School News Report
Middle School students spend nearly every Wednesday on a WEEL (Weizmann Expeditionary Experiential Learning) activity or program.  Sometimes these are field trips and other times they are on-campus adventures, including guest speakers.  Students will prepare news reports about their experiences and this is the first in a series of expected submissions.  Congratulations, Adam, on having the first published Middle School News Report.

Hannah Goldman: A life "In Flames"

Hannah Goldman is a mountain firefighter with the Wildland Fire Crew. Her job is to help protect people and forests from raging fires. Hannah Goldman used to go to Weizmann Day School. She then left in sixth grade to go to a different school. After that, she went on to high school and is now at Evergreen College studying for a degree in ecology.

Hannah Goldman has always loved being out in the wild. When trying to find a job, she tried to find one that would allow her to outside most of the time. At first, she tried living on a farm. She loved it there and got to experience things she never experienced before. After that, she started hiking and backpacking. She loved that too, so she decided she wanted to get paid to hike, which is why she joined the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC). After hiking, someone mentioned to her the idea of joining the Wildland Fire Crew. She thought it was a good idea too, so she joined.

Now, she has been working for the Wildland Fire Crew for one year. She got a land based job that has a base in New Mexico. During the time period that she is working she can get called in for up to two weeks straight and then she gets two days off where they can't call her in. She loves her job so much because she gets to go to a lot of places that she wouldn't otherwise go to. Where ever she goes she usually goes with her team. Once she gets to where ever they have been called into, she and her team will either fight a fire or "fight fire with fire." What I mean by "fight fire with fire" is that she and her team, and maybe other teams too, will do something called "Prescribed Burning." Prescribed burning is when a fire is intentionally lit in a forest so that the forest can be "groomed" and it will be healthy and be able to better withstand future fires. Basically, a controlled fire.

Hannah loves her job and likes being able to go to a lot of places at the same time. She came to Weizmann Day School to present to the middle school class the importance of her job and how important it is to find a job you like.
