The Board Corner  - -  Generations Shabbat
לדור ודור נגיד גדליך ולנצח נצחים קדושתך נקדיש ושבחך א-להינו מפינו לא ימוש
לעולם ועד כי א-ל מלך גדול וקדוש אתה

L'Dor V'Dor:  passing on our traditions from one generation to the next. This phrase has many ways to understand it and for help I have borrowed from a Rosh HaShanah speech given by Rabbi Micah Peltz at Temple Beth Shalom in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
"I've been thinking about the meaning of "L'Dor V'Dor" as I begin to encounter the challenges of raising the next generation of my own family. I realize we're just getting started, but we're beginning to experience some of the joys and the oys of raising Jewish children. For example, on Shabbat, Yael now blesses the candles with Rachel and leads us in HaMotzi. As I see her do these things, I feel tremendous pride and satisfaction at watching her learn how to celebrate Shabbat. But there are some challenging moments, too - arguments about bedtime, what to wear, and when to shut off the TV. I know I know, these should be the worst arguments I ever have with my children. Little kids little problems, big kids big problems - and we've still got a ways to go. But these moments have caused me to reflect on the values I learned from my parents, and to think about what it is exactly that I want to pass on to my children. How can I fulfill this Jewish mission of L'Dor V'Dor?...There is a story in a popular Jewish book of the middle ages about a mother bird walking down the road with three baby birds, when they come to a large puddle. It was too deep for the baby birds to walk across and too wide for them to go around. So the mother bird said to the first baby bird, "If I pick you up and carry you across the puddle, how will you repay me for it?" The baby bird said, "The next puddle we come to, I'll pick you up and carry you across." The mother said, "That's a silly answer. You're too small to carry me across." She asked the same question to the second fledgling, and it answered, "When I've grown up, I'll carry you across puddles." The mother bird shook her head and said, "Even when you're grown up, I won't need you to get across puddles." Then she turned to the third who answered, "Someday I'll be a mother bird and I'll have babies of my own, and I'll do all the things for them that you've done for me." And that, of course, was the right answer. We love our children, we give them life and sustain them because we hope that someday they will have children and they will have learned from us how to be parents, so that the river of life and loving kindness flows forward, not backwards, downstream and not up."
In our own community, next Friday, October 2, at 1:15 pm, we have a chance to honor L'Dor V'Dor through our wonderful Generations Shabbat program. If you have not done so already, please reach out across the generations to relatives and loved ones who would appreciate seeing the Jewish tradition passed on from one generation to the next. Let the office know who will be attending and let your invitee know that they are in for a special treat, a chance to see the next generation learning from their parents and teachers and community. We hope to see everyone there.

Alumni In Action...
More than 200 foster youth (through Together We Rise) visited Disneyland this past Sunday, many for the first time ever, and a lucky group of 10 kids were escorted by WDS alum Stephanie M.  Stephanie raised the funds to cover the cost of their admission and food, and spent the day with them at the theme park.  For most of the young people, this was also an opportunity to reunite with siblings who have been separated through foster program placement, no doubt truly making it the 'Happiest Place on Earth' for this group.  Kol HaKavod, Stephanie - what an amazing mitzvah!
