Lag BaOmer
Bridging the holidays of Pesah and Shavuot is the counting of the Omer. Beginning on the second night of Passover, we are commanded to count the days of the Omer (historically a measure of barley) until the 49th day. On the following day, we celebrate Shavuot, the receiving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai. On the 33rd day of the Omer (Lag BaOmer) the period between Pesach and Shavuot is no longer considered a time of mourning.  It is, in fact, a time that joyous celebrations resume and in Israel, young students can be found at the parks with their teachers, playing games in the fields.

At Weizmann, we will be celebrating Lag BaOmer on Thursday, May 7th, with fun and games in the morning (9:00 am to 12:15 pm) at Victory Park.  The middle school students will lead their "color teams" in relay races, team cheers and dances, and even in a Jewish Trivia Bowl.  Listed below are the "color teams" indicating what color your child should wear next Thursday.  The team leaders will help build the ruah (spirit) with colored hair spray and face paint (all non-toxic, and washable, of course!)  If you prefer your child NOT have their team's color applied to their hair or face, please contact Mrs. Snyder by email no later than Tuesday, May 5.

Weizmann in the News
Weizmann Day School and PJTC brightly shine in the Jewish Journal's cover article, "Beyond the Rainbow".  Several months ago Mrs. Feldman attended the Keshet Leadership Summit--LA Collaborative, a day-long workshop meant to equip Jewish educators and community leaders with tools and guidance to help build capacity for fostering inclusion, particularly of the LGBTQ community.  Weizmann Day School remains committed to providing a warm and nurturing educational environment for ALL students and their families.  With support from our coach, PJTC's Rabbi Silverstein, we are working on developing an action plan to ensure we are successful in our pursuit.

Below is an excerpt from the article.  Underneath that is a direct link to the article in its entirety.

Weizmann Day School in Pasadena created a safe environment for learning about the issue a few years ago when a first-grade boy wanted to come to school in a dress. Administrator Lori Snyder helped prep the other students. The kids had some questions: "If we think his dress is cool, can we tell him?" "Can we tell him we think he's brave?"
