Welcome Back!  Happy New Year!!

I was so excited to see all of the smiling faces jumping out of the cars Monday morning. Although I enjoyed time relaxing with family and friends during winter break, I truly missed our students, parents, and staff.  Coming in Monday morning was like coming home.  I was glad to be back and I hope all of you feel the same.

Listed below are a couple of highlights that will be occurring in the next few months which I hope you will enjoy:

*February 11 is our annual Science Fair.  I do not know of any other K-8 school that requires a submission from each student as early as the primary grades.  Science, an integral part of a Weizmann Day School education, comes alive within our classrooms.  In honor of our namesake, first president of Israel, Chaim Weizmann, a biochemist who developed the acetone-butanol-ethanol fermentation process, we strive to foster in each of our students the importance of inquiry, curiosity, and intellect.  If you have not yet witnessed the Science Fair you are in for a treat!

*February 20 is our Community Shabbat Service, this year at Temple Sinai of Glendale.  Both current and alumni families come out each year to celebrate and participate in an engaging, interactive Shabbat experience with the larger community - this year Glendale.  Singing, praying, friendship, and delicious desserts will be abundant. With an early start time (7:00 pm, students should be in place by 6:45 pm) everyone can enjoy the evening.

*March 14 will showcase our Parent Purim Players performing an original play written by a talented Weizmann grandfather, with a delicious holiday meal and silent auction.  March 14 is also Pi Day and Albert Einstein's birthday--(possible spoiler alert?)  More details to follow.  Please save the date!!

*March 18 highlights our 5th-8th grade thespians as they perform Shakespeare's The Tempest, a performance you definitely will not want to miss.  Elizabethan English, ornate costumes, and comedic timing make for a fabulous show.

Much more will be happening.  Stay tuned and welcome back.

Shabbat Shalom,

Lisa

Did you know...
that Dr. Hervey Segall, Tzedek's grandfather,a renowned
pediatric neuroradiologist, shared  a presentation on the ear with students in 3rd-5th grades?

that 35% of our families have already contributed to this year's Annual Fund Campaign?   If you have not yet made a meaningful donation there is still time to give.  Thank you!

that school begins promptly at 8:15 am?  Don't be late!

that new ASA classes will be starting next week and there is still room for sign-ups in Lego Robotics, Chess, KidsArt, and Mad Science?  Please register with Carrie in the office or Ms. Lori in ASA.

that Science Fair packets were sent home and students should have their projects approved by Mr. Marks before beginning work on them?

that PTO is sponsoring the next family dinner fundraiser at HOOK BURGER in Pasadena, 3453 E. Foothill Blvd., on Wednesday, January 21, 4:00-9:00 pm?  With the (forthcoming) flier, they will donate 20% of all sales, including "take-out" orders, to our school.

that it is important we make all of our students and their families feel welcome by refraining from scheduling birthday parties and other gatherings on Saturday-Shabbat?  Per school policy, food served should be vegetarian.

that the January Community Mitzvah project is collecting diapers (new ones in the package, of course) to be distributed through Foothill Unity?  [Next month we will be collecting coins for planting trees in Israel - start saving now.]

Calling All Lovers of Science:
Mr. Marks needs your help!

In case you have not heard, the middle school is taking their science fair projects to the LA County Science Fair!

In order to compete, we need to help out the at the regional science fair.  Mr. Marks needs 5 volunteers to help for 3 hour shifts at many different points and times doing a variety of jobs on Thursday, March 26th; Friday, March 27th; or Saturday, March 28th.

The science fair is in Pasadena Convention Center, so it is nearby!

If you can donate your time, Mr. Marks would greatly appreciate it!  Please email him at amarks@weizmann.net or find him on the yard!
