Lisa's Lines

Dr. Wendy Mogel is a practicing clinical psychologist, New York Times best-selling author, and an international public speaker. Currently she serves on the scientific advisory board of

Parents magazine and is a research and policy adviser for Challenge Success-a child advocacy program of the Stanford University School of Education.  The Blessing of a Skinned Knee and The Blessing of a B Minus are two of her books which significantly enhanced my own parenting.  I have been fortunate to hear Dr. Mogel speak a number of times, most recently at the Interfaith Baccalaureate Service of The Claremont Colleges last May as part of my eldest son's graduation weekend.  She is wise, witty, and easy to read.  I am happy to share my copies of her book if you wish.

Attached in the Parent/Family/Community Education section is another of her many parenting articles, "Overparenting Anonymous" which appeared in Free-Range Kids, among other popular publications and news programs.  It is a "26-Step program for good parents gone bad". Actually, her purpose is "to provide encouragement to well-intentioned, devoted, loving, intelligent parents who feel powerless to stop themselves from overindulging, overprotecting, and overscheduling their children."

I have often shared that being a parent is the hardest job we will ever have.  (It is even harder than being a Head of School!) Our children did not come with instructions and unlike a scientist who can predict through a hypothesis a future outcome, children defy the odds of probability.

It is my hope that you will enjoy the variety of parenting articles I am including these first weeks of school.  Maybe not everything will resonate with you, yet I hope you do find something that helps.

L'Shanah Tovah, May it be a good and sweet New Year for all of us.

Shabbat Shalom,

Lisa

Did you know...

that our middle school students have the opportunity to participate in intramural sports (football-boys, volleyball-girls) with the Peace and Justice Academy and New Horizon School?

that the middle school students and staff just returned from an overnight "community-building" excursion to Oxnard?

that Mrs. Dinerman is still planning to meet on Sunday, 9/21, 8:30 to 11:00 am to work in the garden?  Everyone is welcome and encouraged to help get the beds ready for student planting in the weeks to follow! Remember, many hands make for little work!

that Homework and Study Club with Ms. Arvey is actively meeting each Tuesday and Wednesday after school? Students may stay (ASA charges apply) to work on their assignments with direct teacher supervision and support.

that are only a few days left for you to bring your shofar and help blow the notes as they are called, celebrating the coming of a new year?

that we are still collecting school supplies for this month's Kehillah community service project?
