"Weizmann students are members of

a caring community..."

 ~Mission Statement

Our job as educators is to foster their academic, social, and emotional growth and it is from our training and experience that we have acquired the wisdom and skills necessary to facilitate this growth. Life-long learning is a value we embrace and as learners we continually strive to improve our behavior, to learn new skills, and to enhance our experiences.

Below is an excerpt form an article written by Mark H. Shpall, JD, Dean of Students at the New Community Jewish High School in West Hills where one of our alum (Nelson) attends.  The full article can be accessed from the link in the Parent/Family/Community Education section below. Mr. Shpall's approach to discipline echoes the message that the Weizmann faculty and I hold dear.  We take the process of classroom management and the task of student discipline very seriously. From the first day, and in every classroom, expectations are defined and discussed and students are held accountable, both in and outside of the classrooms, during the school day.  At all times the values of respect, tolerance, and compassion are maintained.

It is our desire that you as parents partner with us in this process, allowing us to handle appropriately, as we've been trained, social issues at school. Open communication will enable us to best address any concerns, and permitting us to handle conflicts at school will best foster growth and bring about the desired change we wish to accomplish. Deeply embedded in our school philosophy is the belief that all children, with the benefit of education and proper training, have the capacity to do the right thing.

Shabbat Shalom,

Lisa

Betzelem Elohim: From Mission Statement

to Disciplinary Policy

"In the image of God was humanity made. (Genesis 9:6) Beloved is Israel for they are called God's children." Pirkei Avot 3:14

"How we approach and talk to each student will also have a major impact on the outcome of this [disciplinary/educational] process. We approach every disciplinary situation with the belief that the student is a worthy, valuable member of our community. In this way, we have truly internalized the quote from the Torah which allows us to look at every student we deal with as a good person, someone who may have made a mistake but who is made in the image of God. This approach completely changes the tone and tenor of the conversation and lets the child know that we believe in them and their potential instead of always "looking" for our students to trip up and make a mistake."

Kehillah - Supporting Our Community
(For your convenience, we are repeating this letter once more.  If you need to find this information again, please refer back to this or last week's Hadashot, or call the school office for details.)

Dear Families,

This year, instead of each class having an individual mitzvah project, the whole school will be taking part in the mitzvah of kehillah, "supporting our community".  Each month we will be asking the students to bring an item to donate in order to help meet a certain community need.

Here is our schedule for the year:

September: school supplies to be donated to Foothill Unity for children in need.

October: a new or gently used book to be donated to National Council of Jewish Women.

November: food and hygiene items to be delivered to Los Angeles's Skid Row on Thanksgiving.

December: games and toys to be donated to Foothill Unity for families in need.

January: diapers to be donated to Foothill Unity.

February: a coin drive will be held to purchase trees to be planted in observance of Tu B'Shevat.

March: Mac and Cheese "groggers" to be donated to Ronald McDonald House.

April: Matzah to be donated to Beit Tshuvah rehab facility.

May: fruit to be donated to Friends in Deed  in observance of Shavuot.

June: canned food to be donated to Friends in Deed.

Throughout the year we will be sending reminders and more detailed information to all of our families. Also, each month there will be discussions in the classrooms about why we are collecting those specific items and what it means to follow the mitzvah of kehillah.  The students will be actively involved in packaging and preparing the items for their final destination.  We hope in this way to instill in our students - with a hands-on approach - the value of  kehillah,  so that they continue to grow and become kind, caring, and respectful members of their communities.

Thank you for your support and involvement.

Sincerely,

Weizmann Faculty and Staff
