Lisa's Lines

Shanah Tovah -

What a great first day we had!!  It was wonderful seeing the students' smiling faces returning to school and it was terrific to welcome many new friends.

Our middle school visited the Peace and Justice Academy middle school and enjoyed lunch and friendship together.  Shelly (Jonny's mom), a high school teacher there, greeted our students wishing them well on their first day.

All of our students met for a first day assembly and everyone was so excited to be together.  Most were astonished to learn that two or our teaching assistants, Miss Arielle and Moreh Tohmer, are both alumni of Weizmann Day School and that as students here, they each had Mrs. Dinerman and Geveret Eliyahu as teachers.

We were fortunate to have Stacie and Debbie, from the PJTC Gift Shop, on hand yesterday to sell kippot.  If you still need to purchase a kippah, feel free to see Bruce in the temple office.

Always a delight to be joined by fellow shofar blowers each morning; the more the merrier!

Shanah Tovah,
Lisa

Kehillah - Supporting Our Community

Dear Families,

This year, instead of each class having an individual mitzvah project, the whole school will be taking part in the mitzvah of kehillah, "supporting our community".  Each month we will be asking the students to bring an item to donate in order to help meet a certain community need.

Here is our schedule for the year:

September: school supplies to be donated to Foothill Unity for children in need.

October: a new or gently used book to be donated to National Council of Jewish Women.

November: food and hygiene items to be delivered to Los Angeles's Skid Row on Thanksgiving.

December: games and toys to be donated to Foothill Unity for families in need.

January: diapers to be donated to Foothill Unity.

February: a coin drive will be held to purchase trees to be planted in observance of Tu B'Shevat.

March: Mac and Cheese "groggers" to be donated to Ronald McDonald House.

April: Matzah to be donated to Beit Tshuvah rehab facility.

May: fruit to be donated to Friends in Deed  in observance of Shavuot.

June: canned food to be donated to Friends in Deed.

Throughout the year we will be sending reminders and more detailed information to all of our families. Also, each month there will be discussions in the classrooms about why we are collecting those specific items and what it means to follow the mitzvah of kehillah.  The students will be actively involved in packaging and preparing the items for their final destination.  We hope in this way to instill in our students - with a hands-on approach - the value of  kehillah,  so that they continue to grow and become kind, caring, and respectful members of their communities.

Thank you for your support and involvement.

Sincerely,

Weizmann Faculty and Staff
