A Challenge from the Graduates

On Monday evening, June 16, Weizmann Day School graduated its third class of 8th grade students.  The six graduates - Ben, Matthew, Nelson, Nicole, Omer, and Zoe - have successfully completed their studies at Weizmann and are ready to embark on the next level of their educational journey.  As they enter different high schools in the fall, there is one strong bond that will keep them linked, both to each other and to Weizmann, for life.  That unique "glue" holding them together is their mutual investment in the elementary and middle school that is now their alma mater.

In addition to the traditional graduation pomp and circumstance, an evening filled with speeches, songs, laughter, tears, and even Torah teachings, something else amazing occurred.  The class of 2014 left their indelible mark when they presented Mrs. Feldman with a check for $100 to be used as a donation to Weizmann's newly founded endowment fund.  Acting as the Student Council, the eighth grade class voted to use a portion of their fundraising earnings to give a gift that keeps on giving.  In doing so, this incredible group of students sealed the links that will forever keep them connected.

Their investment in Weizmann Day School also helps ensure that future generations of students will have the benefit of the same amazing Jewish education that each of these graduates now boasts.  One of the 8th graders commented, "Giving back to the school that has given so much to us feels like the right thing to do." Another student had this to say, "I hope our donation will make others want to give, too."  And therein lies the challenge to each of you!  The Weizmann Day School graduating class of 2014 is leading the charge and challenging all of our families, friends, and stakeholders to meet or exceed their donation.  As one more student so eloquently stated, "Everyone should be able to give at least a matching contribution, and a lot of people can give even more."   The last (and perhaps the most profound) comment made was, "If everyone gives like we did, if everyone cares like we do, then Weizmann Day School will be here for our kids and our kid's kids!"

And the tzedakah goes to...
At the end of every school year, each class decides where they would like their tzedakah money to go.  This year the classes decided as follows:
Kindergarten - Heffer International
1st, 4th, and 5th grades - World Wildlife Fund
2nd and 3rd grades - Fur Babies
Middle School - L. A. Humane Society
The students were very proud of their efforts and took joy in performing the mitzvah of tzedakah.  Kol HaKavod!
