Holiday Happenings
Or in this case, Holiday Happened!

On this past Monday, March 17, as a school community, we fulfilled all four mitzvot of Purim!  We started our celebration with the ever-popular carnival, then enjoyed delicious hamantashen (Purim cookies) with our lunch, listened to the 4th graders do an amazing job chanting the Megilla, traded Mishloah Manot with our classmates, and everyone worked on myriad mitzvah projects. New to this year's carnival, and likely one of the most popular activities, was King Ahasuerus' Haunted Castle. Kol HaKavod to the 8th grade Student Council.

Even before the official start of the festivities, there were high-fives and giggles abound as everyone entered the yard with creative, clever, and beautiful costumes.  Most noticeable among the angels and princesses and pirates and kings were the staff duos of ketchup & mustard, Thing 1 & Thing 2, peanut butter & jelly, and Simon & Garfunkel.  As part of the morning greeting, the famous musical duo serenaded the crowd with The Sounds of Weizmann a remastered version of their popular hit, The Sound of Silence.  For your enjoyment, the lyrics are listed below.

The Sounds of Weizmann

Time to go to Language Arts,

Hebrew and your Science class!

We told you this is called the Quiet Zone!

Don't you stop and eat the fennel now!

Because your teachers are raising their right hands

And not their left.

Just listen to the sounds of Weizmann!

And at your lunchtime you will see

Some peacocks raising their big tails

Just you listen and you hear them crow

Eat your lunch and maybe you will grow

To be as big and strong as the middle school;

They're really cool.

Just listen to the sounds of Weizmann!

Naturally, amazingly fun and educational programs like this do not just happen!  It takes a village...to put on a Weizmann Day School Purim celebration.  Thanks so much to all of the staff and parents who worked hard and coordinated efforts to benefit our students.

A Note About Annual Fund
Weizmann students benefit directly from contributions to our Annual Fund Campaign. These much needed funds allow us to offer meaningful extra-curricular programs like Shakespeare, our participation in the LA County Regional Science Fair, Yosemite science trip, Astro Camp, recorder music class, ceramics and fine arts, etc. With 100% parent participation, we can apply for and more readily qualify for grant funding, too.

We are slowly growing closer to our goal of 100% participation. Please help us meet our financial goal by giving generously with a meaningful gift to this year's Annual Fund.  Help us meet our goal of 100% participation by joining families who have already given.

Todah Rabbah to all who have contributed thus far!!
Any and all contributions count!  Watch the numbers grow...

Camp Gilboa Visits Weizmann

In the past few weeks, Weizmann welcomed madriim (counselors) from Habonim Dror Camp Gilboa, who came to lead our 3rd through 6th graders in an interactive journey through Israel. Through activities and discussions that linked aspects of society to living places, our students explored the geography, history, society, and complexity of Israel.
h

The 3rd and 4th graders' journey began in Tel Aviv, 1909, with the waves of immigration and ended with

a look at Tel Aviv as a modern cultural center - as new and avant-garde today as it was in its founding. Their excursion also included a visit to Jerusalem, where the students enjoyed a tasty treat of pita with Israeli chocolate spread.

The 5th and 6th graders went on an interactive exploration of Israel's foundation and government, learned about the Knesset (Israeli Parliament), and fast-forwarded to examine the current Israeli political landscape.  Next week the 7th and 8th graders will be learning about the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and the youth movements involvement in it.

Jewish identity, community building, social justice and a connection to Israel are at the core of Habonim Dror Camp Gilboa's summer and year-round programs. Its unique youth-led model promotes critical thinking, independence, and leadership skills.  Gilboa's spirited activities and team-building adventures expand minds and enrich souls.

Check out their website at www.campgilboa.org or give them a call at their office (323-653-6772) if you would like to learn more about these program or about Gilboa's summer camp.   They would love to hear from you.
