Weizmann Day School Middle School:

Our Small Size is Truly Our Huge Advantage!

Parents, as you are considering options for middle school and are hearing your friends do the same, keep in mind these facts culled from recent research:

~ Traditional middle school configurations have been criticized due to the number of transitions (K-5, 6-8, 9-12) it requires students to make. Research indicates that student performance suffers after transitions; therefore, a K-8 model is better because its structure reduces the number of student transitions.  "A move to K-8 schools may eliminate the harmful effect of transitioning between schools."

~ There is evidence that smaller schools are good for adolescents as it allows for improved academic achievement for all students and improved relationships with families and communities.  Class size is still one of the most important factors in choosing an education plan for your child.  The greater the amount of one-to-one time teachers can spend with students means that each child feels more supported and is provided with a more personalized education.

~ Students who leave elementary schools for middle schools in grades six or seven tend to lose ground in both reading and math compared to their peers who attend K-8 schools.  "Research has found that students entering grades six through eight or seven to eight schools experience a 'sharp drop' in achievement versus those attending K-8 schools."

~ "Proponents of K-8 schools cite the value of more nurturing elementary school settings." A high-impact middle grades program within a K-8 configuration will likely respond more effectively to the developmental needs of adolescents (who have only recently completed elementary school) through caring relationships, high expectations and support to reach them, enrichment and exploratory options, and socially relevant learning opportunities.

Here at Weizmann, we are proud to offer what research supports as an effective middle school program.  Teachers have direct knowledge of the developmental and academic needs of this age group and are devoted to providing a more tailored education for each student.  All students get the chance to lead groups and to do such activities as public speaking, performing, and argumentation in a comfortable, non-judgmental setting.  Students have input into programming as well, and teachers meet often to discuss the students individually and as a class.   We consider our small size a huge advantage!

Some information and advice 'borrowed' from the web by our middle school teachers:

Early adolescents share several characteristics

  • desire for independence
  • growth in importance of the peer group
  • sexual, emotional and social maturation
  • search for values and norms
  • resentment of authority figures
  • ambivalence concerning dependence
  • emancipation from the home
  • fluctuation of emotions
  • concern about physical growth and appearance
  • development of self-concept

Middle school can be a confusing time, for parents as well as for their kids. Your child is becoming more independent yet still needs your support as much as ever. While you may decide to allow your child more autonomy in some areas, be sure to stay actively involved in your child's school life. Research shows that adolescents whose parents are engaged in their education are more likely to achieve academic success. Here are some tips for getting involved in your child's middle school learning experience.

**Get to know the teachers  **Volunteer to help at school events

**Go to school meetings  **Talk to your child about school

**Find out about/follow up on homework, assignments, and tests
