A Worthy Celebration

As many of you know, in recognition of our 30th anniversary, we held a beautiful gala in the Social Hall Saturday evening.  It was a pleasure to have this opportunity to formally thank our honorees: Sandy and Alan Whitman, along with our past presidents and founders - whose collective vision I have the honor of bringing to life every day.

It was particularly meaningful to share such a special occasion with so many friends and supporters -- representing our past, present, and future -- who care about the continuity of our school and its mission. It also meant so much for dignitaries, including Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard, Arcadia Mayor Mickey Segal, California State Senator Carol Liu, U. S. Congresswoman Judy Chu, and California State Assemblyman Chris Holden, as well as clergy from synagogues near and far, to recognize these achievements.

It was such a wonderful evening.  I enjoyed seeing so many current and alumni families in attendance.  A very special thanks go to the Gala Committee whose hard work came to such lovely (and delicious) fruition in every elegant and heartwarming detail: Amy, Faith, Simon, Yudie, Sandy, Franci, Sue, Elena, and Andrea.  (Thanks to Ira Blitz for the photos.)

Shabbat Shalom,

~Lisa

100 Days at Weizmann Day School

Thursday was the 100th day of school.  More than just a milestone worth noting - the 100th day is the perfect time to have fun with the number 100.  Exploring mathematical operations such as counting, sorting, patterning, estimating, and calculating, along with examining such concepts as proportions, odds, ratios, and percentages, as well as employing many other math skills, was all part of the fun when celebrating the 100th day of school at Weizmann.

All of the students in many of their classes found themselves honoring the 100th day in a variety of ways.  In kindergarten, the students made a 100th Day book; they made, wore, and ate 100 Fruit Loop necklaces; colored 100th day glasses; took 100 steps around school; drew portraits of themselves on the 100th day; and even had a scavenger hunt to find 100 Kisses that were hidden around the classroom.  The first graders brought in collections of 100 small items to count and group by 2's, 5's, and 10's; made 100th day crowns and crafts; drew pictures using 100 dots; looked at their work from 100 days ago and made an amazing discovery - they are all 100 days smarter!

In second grade Hebrew, the students together listed 100 Hebrew words on the board, and in science, they predicted how full a jar would become after adding 100 drops of water to it. They drew pictures and wrote about their outcomes and conclusions, too.  The third grade class made mosaics using 100 beans of various colors and shades, listed 100 items they have in their bedrooms, came up with 100+ words in 10 minutes using the phrase "One hundredth day of school" and read an abridged version of The Hundred Penny Box by Sharon Bell Mathis. Fourth graders took 100 to heart - they increased their heart-rates by doing 10 reps of 10 different exercises to equal 100 total activities, including jumping jacks, sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups, toe touches, etc.  The fastest time was 1 minute, 11 seconds.

The fifth graders, in Jewish Studies class, used the process of Gematria, a system that assigns numeric equivalents to Hebrew letters in order to find hidden messages in words, to create Hebrew words whose value would equal 100.  They also put Hebrew letters together to create 100 Hebrew words.  In the fifth grade math class, as well as in the Pre-Algebra and Algebra math classes, each student counted 100 Fruit Loops, put them in groups by color, and then recorded the probability and chance of pulling each color from the box.  The eighth grade advisory group listed 100 words using only the letters in the title, 100th Day Activities.

We hope the students had fun, and learned something new and interesting, in their adventures with the number 100.
