Science Matters
at Weizmann Day School

The students and staff are extremely excited about Weizmann Day School's Annual Science Fair coming up this Wednesday, February 12, 6-7 pm, in the PJTC Social Hall.  It is going to be an amazing night of scientific learning and discovery for all. The science curriculum at Weizmann is a pillar of our school and our community, and it is with much anticipation that all of our students, grades K-8,

participate each year in the science fair. We are phenomenally lucky to be located so close to two of world's most renowned and respected scientific research institutions, Caltech and JPL. Additionally, we hold within us an enormous sense of pride for our namesake, the world-famous chemist and Zionist statesman, Israel's first president, Chaim Weizmann, and our current connection as the only elementary school affiliated with the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel.

As we do with all of our programs each year, the teachers and staff evaluate the educational value and meaningfulness of the past year's activities. The Science Fair is no exception, and this year the judging will look a bit different than it has in past years.  Starting in 2014, only the middle school projects (grades 6-8) will be judged by an outside panel for content, presentation, and points.  The most decorated 6th and 7th grade projects (highest scoring based on the average of points awarded per all three judge's rubrics) will then move on to the Los Angeles County Science Fair in March, along with our 8th graders who have already been admitted to the county science fair, a privilege we reserve for the graduating class, and in consideration of their experience with the process from previous year's participation.  The judging at process at Weizmann will prepare all of our middle school students for the judging that will take place at the county science fair.

However, every student's project, regardless of grade level, will be assessed by his/her science teacher.  A standardized rubric is used to evaluate each student's project and classroom presentation, the results of which are calculated as part of the science grade earned for the trimester.

We hope to see you all, with family, friends, and neighbors, at the Weizmann Day School Science Fair on February 12th and invite you to the Los Angeles County Science Fair, in support of our middle school students, on Saturday, March 29th at the Pasadena Convention Center. This is an opportunity to marvel at the ingenuity and ambition of this young generation, particularly when it comes to the sciences and engineering.

Artistically Speaking...

Artwork from six of our students was recently entered in a Los Angeles County Student Art Exhibition.  The goal of this L.A. County Student Art Contest is to showcase outstanding artwork.  Winning entries will be recognized at a County Board of Education meeting on March 18, 2014. Three works from our kindergarten students -- peacock drawings by Alan, Lucy, and Stevie, and three works done by first and second graders -- Garden/Art class drawings by Anastasia, Sydney, and Sarai were submitted.  Kol Hakavod!
