Exploding with Science Excitement
at Weizmann Day School

The 5th graders returned from an incredible three days at Astrocamp, high in the mountains of Idylwild, CA, with a whole new appreciation for outdoor science education!  The experiences and memories they left with from science camp will surely be with them for life!  When not spending the very little bit of downtime they had in the Pine dorms, the 5th grade class was immersed in hands-on science from sun up to sun down!  They jumped on a giant glow in the dark wall, wrote their names with purple lasers, played with highlighters under a UV light, and played music with a laser in the Lights and Lasers class!  They climbed up the cliffs of Mars, and ate potato chips and Oreo's frozen in liquid nitrogen!  The group went on a night hike around camp using only the moon as light for guidance, and explored Polaris, Orion, and Jupiter with various high-powered Astrocamp telescopes!  The budding scientists experienced anti-gravity training, just like NASA astronauts do, in the heated indoor pool and built underwater satellites without using verbal communication!  Everyone had an electrifying time in Electricity and Magnetism and things were blown up in the Atmosphere and Gases session!  An interstellar auction with lots of fun intergalactic items was the highlight of the evening on the second night!  The students also conquered their fear of heights as they climbed a 40 foot tree and walked 20 feet along a log high in the sky on the Cat Walk!  And...the epic conclusion to this year's Astrocamp experience...swinging 40 feet in the air back and forth on the Sky Coaster!  The Weizmann Day School Astrocamp trip for 2014 was nothing short of incredibly, amazingly, fantastically, awesomely, mind-blowing.

From the stars themselves:  "Micro-gravity was tricky but fun!"  "The hydrogen explosion was incredible!"  "Space night was amazing!"  "The inversion glasses were strange and exciting!" "Amazing, creative experiments!"  "Exhilarating and breath-taking, I was awestruck!"

Huge thanks to Dr. Gabi, renowned Professor of Neurosurgery at USC, for giving a fascinating lecture to our 5th - 8th graders on Monday, 1/27, as part of our science classes and the Distinguished Lecture Series on Science. Our students gain so much from the generosity and talents of our wonderful families and community members.  Please contact Mr. Marks if you would like to make a presentation, or if you know someone who would like to share their extraordinary talents and experiences with our students.
