Weizmann students - making the world a better place...

Tza'ar Baalei Hayim, "Kindness to Animals",  is a mitzvah that can easily engage children.  One of the highest virtues in Judaism is extended to animals, as well as to humans. In the Talmud  we are taught that before sitting down to a meal, one must first see that the  animals are fed.

This week, thanks to the generosity of Dr. Dana (mom of Bianca and Anatasia), our second and third grade students had a wonderful visit to Rose City Veterinary Hospital.  They were able to witness firsthand, being put into practice, what they learn in their Jewish studies about the mitzvah of taking care of animals.  While at the offices, the students were able to hear about and see how animal patients are treated.  They visited the surgery room and learned how the animals are monitored, the x-ray room and learned one way injured animals are diagnosed, and the dental care room where they learned about the importance
of dental hygiene for animals.

Here are some of their comments from the day:  "I learned the vet's office is just like my doctor's office!"  "I learned that bull dogs grow BIG!"  "My favorite part was getting to see the puppies!"  "I learned that x-rays are dangerous because they use lasers!"  "I learned lots of things that Dr. Dana said!"

We are proud of our students and families who partner with us  in making the world a better place, through learning and hands-on experiences.

I  wish you a relaxing and rejuvenating winter break and will look forward to greeting you bright and early on Monday morning, January 6, 2014.

Shabbat Shalom,
~ Lisa

PTO News

 Dear Parents,

Thank you for all of your help so far this year with PTO events and fundraisers.  We raised over $5,000 from the book fair, Innisbrook and Scrip Gift Card fundraisers, and had great turnouts at Souplantation and other programs.  The money raised is going to help fulfill teachers' wish lists, including numerous field trips that will be taking place in the second half of year!  Now we are asking for your help with fulfilling another teacher wish.  The school has 10 iPads that the teachers can use when they need it for their classes, but a few more iPads would be ideal.  If any families will be "upgrading" their iPads this Holiday Season and can donate their gently used ones (must be able to upload current apps) to the school, so we can have a complete set for all of our teachers' needs, that would be incredible.  The PTO will do what it can to fulfill every teacher wish, but help with big ticket items like this can go a long way to help make sure everything on the wish lists gets fulfilled.  If you are able to help, please contact Carrie in the office, Maite, or Jennifer.

Thank you,

The PTO
