Lisa's Lines

We honor the legacy of our namesake, Chaim Weizmann, by providing a variety of enrichment science opportunities at school.  This week we had a fascinating presentation on the Mars rover Curiosity.  Those who attended experienced firsthand the magnitude in size and scope of this extraordinary JPL conceived project.  Kudos to Richard for his expertise and generosity of time.

Also, this week we were able to send our middle school students, for the first time, to Yosemite National Park for a three day/two night outdoor science education program.  They had a fantastic, meaningful experience!  What a great chance to bond as a community  and connect to the wonder and science of nature in one of the most amazing places.  Below is a day by day description from Mr. Marks and Ms. Rotter.

Shabbat Shalom,

Lisa

What an incredible experience the middle school had in Yosemite! We left warm, sunny Pasadena at 7:42 am from school bound for the majestic Yosemite National Park on Monday morning. Packed tight into our reliable van, we made the eight hour journey up to the beloved national park. We stopped for lunch at Millerton Lake just outside of Fresno.  After a beautiful drive up and down and all around the mountains of the Sierra forest, we arrived at Yosemite. We made a quick detour through the Yosemite Valley, past El Capitan and Half Dome, and arrived at Crane Flats, our home for the next couple of days.  The moment we jumped out of the van, we realized that we were not in Pasadena anymore.  The temperature was 30 degrees and the snow on the ground was at about 6 inches. After getting settled into our cabin, Paradigm, we picked bunks, unpacked, and started a fire in the iron fire place, the heat source for our time there.  We then had an informative orientation session with our site leader Lauren, who went over the rules of the camp and the trip.  We enjoyed an awesome dinner of frittatas and veggie soup, and then embarked on our evening program, a night hike through the woods using nothing but our senses and the light from the moon and the incredible stars above. We all got into bed for some much needed rest.  The temperature at bed time ....14 degrees!!!

We awoke at 7:30 am and enjoyed our breakfast of eggs, hash browns, oatmeal, fruit, and yogurt.  We went back to our cabin, packed our day packs and headed out with our trip leader, Mara. We hiked high into the mountains of Crane Flats, stopping along the way to talk about Yosemite, California, biology, topography, ecology, and geology.  We reached our destination for the day, Crane Flats Fire Helipad, an active helicopter landing pad for fire rescue choppers which was being used no more than a month ago during the fires there. We ate lunch ON the helipad. From the top of Crane Flats we could see the entire park and all its boundaries, which is the size of Rhode Island.  We began our hike back down to camp, stopping to build 3-D maps of California and Yosemite out of the resources nature provided us.  We had a quick snack and finished our hike down the mountain in silence, taking in the true beauty of the dominating size of the park. It was free time, at which a serious game of knockout broke out.  We had salad and spaghetti for dinner and then circled up for our evening program, a camp fire...indoors.  We played games and had a reflection time; then we retired for the evening.
The next morning we awoke to 19 degree weather at 6:30 am. We packed our van, ate blueberry pancakes for breakfast, cleaned our cabin and bathrooms, and headed for the forty minute trek down into the valley, saying good bye to Crane's Flats.  We unloaded at Curry Village and started the seven mile hike to Mirror Pond and up to Snow Creek, which was on North Dome, directly across from Half Dome. We ate our lunch on the trail with the most amazing view at about 4700 feet, well above the trees with nothing obstructing our view of the entire valley! We hiked down while talking about the history of the park and about El Capitan.  We said goodbye to Mara and loaded up for the drive back to Pasadena.  After stopping for a quick dinner in Visalia, we arrived home to WDS at 9:45 pm - tired, exhausted, aching, and a little smelly, yet happy as can be as we knew we had just experienced the most incredibly, amazingly, epically awesome trip we could have ever imagined, having been able to enjoy it with the most incredibly, amazingly, epically awesome people ever - our classmates, along with Mr. Marks and Mrs. Rotter.
