Lisa's Lines

Next week Parent Teacher Conferenceswill be held on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons and Thursday evening.  We hope by now all of you have had the chance to sign up for a conference in the school office with your child's teacher(s).  (Note that we have arranged additional conference times for Hebrew faculty in 3rd-8th grades.) Empowering our students to be active participants in their learning, second through eighth grade parents will be joined by their children at conferences.

Since home learning and school learning go hand-in-hand, you and your child's teachers are natural partners.  Yet many parents feel anxious about talking with teachers, perhaps because they are not quite sure where to begin.  Questions like these may help you to uncover the information you need to understand what your child is experiencing in the classroom, and to begin building an ongoing relationship with your child's teachers.

Shabbat Shalom,

Lisa

5 Questions to Ask Your Child's Teachers

1) What topics will the class next be studying?

Knowing what your child will be learning will help you to discuss the same topics at home and to share more directly in his/her learning. (Our Monthly Letters are designed to supply this information as well.)

2) In what areas do you observe that my child excels at school?

Knowing your child's areas of achievement at school helps you to pinpoint his/her strengths and transfer that knowledge to other areas.

3) In what areas does my child need help?

Knowing your child's challenges allows you to build his/her confidence in these areas and work toward improving them.

4) How does my child interact with others?

An important part of what every child learns in school is how to get along with peers and how to deal with authority figures.  Hearing about your child's challenges and successes in this area can help shape the guidance you provide.

5) What can I do to support my child?

Getting a set of specific suggestions from your child's teachers and creating an action plan will connect school and home, and help your child feel more successful and secure in learning.
