Yom HaZikaron (Israel's Memorial Day for fallen soldiers) was observed this past Monday, April 15. Last Friday, April 12, 4th through 8th graders participated in a program about Yom HaZikaron. Yom HaZikaron is widely observed throughout Israel. "Beginning at sunset the night before and lasting throughout the entire day, places of entertainment are closed by law while shops, restaurants, and movie theaters are shut down by tradition. The radio and television stations play stories about Israel's wars and air programming that conveys the somber mood of the day" (Jewish Virtual Library). The sounding of an air raid siren occurs twice during the observance of the day. The first siren marks the beginning of Yom HaZikaron and the second marks the public recitation of prayers in military cemeteries.
Our 4th through 8th grade students had the opportunity to learn about military life in Israel from our guest speaker, Lev Malinger, a former IDF solider. Lev shared his experience in the army and the emotions he felt hearing the sirens in Israel.
Yom HaAtzmaut was celebrated on Tuesday, April 16. This modern holiday celebrates Israel's Independence in 1948. Yom HaAtzmaut always falls immediately after Yom HaZikaron. "The message of linking these two days is clear: Israelis owe their independence - the very existence of the state - to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for it" (Jewish Virtual Library). The shift from sadness to joy occurs a few minutes after sundown, when the Israeli flag at Har Herzel (a military cemetery in Jerusalem) is raised from half mast to the top.
Weizmann Day School and Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center celebrated Yom HaAtzmaut together Tuesday evening. Everyone wore blue and white and enjoyed a dinner of falafel and pita. Weizmann students and Louis B. Silver Religious School students came together to sing about Israel. Keshet Chaim, an incredible contemporary dance group, performed moving dances about Israel. The festive day concluded with a beautiful joining of our communities singing the HaTikvah, Israel's national anthem.
Look out for upcoming Holiday Happenings about Earth Day and Shavuot celebrations here at Weizmann!!

It is time once again for the State of the School Evening. The results of the Parent Survey will be presented at the meeting on May 1, 7:30 pm, in Knell Chapel. In order to present the results, it is important that each family complete the survey. Details are listed in the note below:
Below please find a link to a relatively brief (5-10 minutes) yet very important anonymous survey about our school.
It is extremely important to us that each household participate in the survey process for the following reasons:
1) Family surveys are an important part of our school accreditation commitment 2) Your honest answers will help us improve our school 3) This anonymous survey is a great way for you to make us aware of needs, concerns, or highlights that you may not have shared with us via other avenues 4) Your thoughtful answers will help us in our outreach efforts to continue to build our school
Please complete one survey per family -- ideally by the parent/s or caregiver/s most involved with the school.
All responses to the survey are due by Sunday, April 21 so please take a few moments to complete it ASAP.
S urvey results will be shared with you on our State of the School Evening on Wednesday, May 1, at 7:30 pm in Knell Chapel.
Please mark that date in your calendars if you have not done so already.
Please do not let your viewpoint be left out.
Thank you and L'Todah for your time and attention!
