Holiday Happenings

This week we celebrated Pesah at school!

Pesah is one of the most widely celebrated Jewish holidays and commemorates the biblical story of Sh'mot (Exodus), when Hebrew slaves were released from bondage in Egypt. Pesah is a celebration of freedom.

A Pesah seder is a service traditionally held at home as part of the Pesah celebration. It is typically observed on the first night of Pesah, and in some homes on the second night as well. A haggadah is used to facilitate the seder. Hagaddah means "the telling," in Hebrew, and it contains instructions for the seder, blessings and the Pesah story.

On Wednesday, March 20, we participated in our own seder! Kindergarten through fifth grade enjoyed participating at the elementary school seder in the Social Hall. Fourth and fifth grade did a beautiful job leading. Each fourth and fifth grade student took on a role of a biblical character during the time of the Exodus. Haggadot from the seder, will be available at the Spring Concert on Friday, March 22. Please feel free to take them home to use at your own seder.

Middle School participated in a very special seder of their own creation. Students in the middle school worked diligently throughout to create a "mock" seder. Middle school students studied the different components of the haggadah and rewrote the haggadah to create the "Mario Seder"!

We extend our gratitude and thanks to all of our parents who helped make our celebration fantastic and a special thanks to Heather for all her hard work and support in organizing the food and set up.

Look out for more Holiday Happenings after Pesah break, here at Weizmann!

Did You Know.......?

March 21:  It was on this day in 1963 that thousands of marchers, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., left Selma, Alabama, headed to Montgomery, to protest the disenfranchisement of African-American voters. They had attempted the march twice before, earlier in the month, but the first time they had been badly beaten by state troopers and deputies, and the second time they were ordered to turn back. This time, under court order, they were allowed to proceed, and by the time they reached the state capitol in Montgomery, there were 25,000 marchers, many answering King's call for people across the country to come and join.

One of the people marching at the front of the line, arm in arm with Dr. King, was Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, King's friend and colleague. Heschel said:

"For many of us, the march from Selma to Montgomery was about protest and prayer. Legs are not lips and walking is not kneeling. And yet our legs uttered songs. Even without words, our march was worship. I felt my legs were praying."

ERBs are coming up soon. The Educational Records Bureau (ERB) is a not for profit organization that offers assessments for achievement for independent schools.   ERBs demonstrate how our students compare to other students at schools of the same caliber. ERB scores are not part of your child's school grade.

"Founded in 1927, ERB's mission is to create testing and learning solutions that help schools develop improved curriculum, teaching, and learning through diagnosis of assessment results that address essential learning standards". (Taken from ERB website)

Weizmann Day School will be administering ERB tests during the week of May 6th for grade 3 through 8th between 8:30-10:30 each day. The tests administered will contain math and language art assessments.

It is extremely important to be on time, as late students will not be allowed to enter the classroom. There are NO make-up tests. It is also very important for your child to get at least eight hours of sleep each night before, as well as eat a healthy, nutritious breakfast the day of each test.

We are pleased to be joining the LBSRS and PJTC in a campus-wide Yom HaAtzmaut celebration on Tuesday, April 16.  Attached is more information about the joint choir, festive dinner, and participation by the Los Angeles Israeli Scout Troop.

Plan to join us in recognizing Israel's 65th Anniversary.
