Lisa's Lines

One of the most poignant things I learned in my teacher credential program was the necessity to act in loco parentis, literally "in place of parents" when educating our students. Last Friday while the Weizmann students were out of school, the staff and I spent the day reviewing the current procedures we have in place, and developing new protocols to be implemented in the event of fire, earthquake and/or any other situations that may jeopardize the safety of our children. We take very seriously our responsibility to protect, nurture, and administer care for your children as if they were our own. Just as we know that our children will be cared for in their schools in an emergency situation, you can know that our  focus will be exclusively concentrated on your children.

Upon returning to classes this week each teacher made time to discuss the safety procedures in an extended homeroom so that the students are also informed and updated on how to be safe at Weizmann. All of the earthquake kits and classroom emergency supplies were newly refurbished this summer, and we have the proper first aid equipment and food items in each location.   Although typically kindergarten students include a favorite stuffed animal in their box of extra clothes kept at school, you may consider sending in a labeled comfort item that your child can use in case of a prolonged stay on campus. Decks of cards are also good to have on hand.

Related to safety at school, we discussed as a faculty appropriate expectations when playing games/sports during recess and rules are now posted in the classrooms and throughout the building so that we can properly communicate appropriate conduct as a conduit to yard safety.

In each classroom a placard on the wall reads, "At Weizmann Day School We Act with KINDNESS, RESPECT and SAFETY." It is our responsibility and the practice to which we adhere.
