Elections Rock WDS!  by Mrs. V.

On Tuesday morning, Election Day, everyone at WDS was abuzz, asking the question, who would win the election? But Obama and Romney were not on our minds, nor on the ballot. We were excited about voting for Christopher Newton or Amber Kunis, our avatar presidential candidates. It turned out to be a very close race, with Kunis winning by only a few votes.

The most significant part of the election process at WDS, however, took place on Monday afternoon in Knell Chapel, decorated in red, white, and blue for our town meeting. The candidates gave speeches and debated some of the main issues of the election. All the students watched and listened, and the third through fifth grade students grilled the candidates about their platforms.   The candidates, their running mates, campaign managers, and co-debaters performed with confidence and intelligence. Watch out 2024 when they are eligible for office in Washington!

Here are some key quotes:

FROM NEWTON (Head speech writer and actor: Aaron, 8th grade):

"I was governor of Wisconsin for more than eight years and served our military for five years. I believe the people of America should have more than enough because enough is not enough. I have worked with all types of business, and I have a lot of experience with politics, business, people and Medicare. The main thing that I have done in the past few years is business and politics. I think that my business skills and my political career will help America with finance and politics. In the past few years I found out that many people in my state have suffered and when they elected me as governor I created an economic power house of money and power.  My goal is to help people who don't have jobs because America is the greatest country and those people out there deserve all that they need."

FROM KUNIS (Head speech writer and actor Samantha, 8th grade):

"People always asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I always answered "President." People would smile at me and give me that look of doubt. But my mother always told me that if I want to achieve something, then I can do it, and I took her word for it. . . . . .On education: Every child's education is important. Every child needs an education. Without it, where are you going to go? Nowhere. You need an education in order to succeed. And if you do, you can be anything you want. Whether you're a Doctor, Lawyer, Senator, or even President, you have to know almost a little bit of everything. An education is so important in every way. But my main focus is to help students learn to want to be in school and try the best that they can."
