...Weizmann students are members of a caring community in which they ... participate in tikkun olam -- making the world a better place.~ The WDS Mission Statement

Tikkun Olam, "Repairing the World", is the cornerstone of our tradition and heritage. As stated in our mission, this responsibility is integral to all that we do, say and create; a focal point in the curriculum.

In the Teacher Monthly Letters posted on our website, you can read how this month we are commencing with these grade level mitzvah/service learning projects in a more direct way. Below is an overview of each project and the connection to our Judaic sources:

Kindergarten and 1st Grade: Kibbud Z'kaynim, "Loving and Honoring the Elderly", - Monthly Visits to the Terraces

2nd Grade: Ba'al Tasheet, "Preserving the Earth"- Visits at Eaton Canyon Nature Preserve

3rd Grade: Tza'ar Ba'alei Hayim, "Compassion for Animals" -  Visits to the San Gabriel Humane Society, area pet shops, and veterinarian clinics.

4th Grade: Ma'akhil R'evim, "Feeding the Hungry"- Visits to Friends in Deed to organize and shelf donated food items

5th Grade: Bikkur Holim, "Supporting and Healing the Sick"- Organized efforts in support of the Pasadena Ronald McDonald House

Middle School: Kehillah, "Community"- Coordinated parent-student efforts in the surrounding area that serves and distributes food such as Homeboy Bakery, Union Station, etc.

Acts of Tikkun Olam are doubly blessed; both the donor and recipient benefit from these acts of kindness. At Weizmann our children learn early on the mitzvah of helping others to make the world a better place. It is our hope that we are fostering lifelong lessons.

Shabbat Shalom!

1) Today across the country over 14 million people participated in the Great ShakeOut!  At 10:18am our staff and students practiced what to do to be safe during an earthquake. Safety is one of our top priorities and we are proud to say that our staff and students participate regular drills throughout the year to ensure we know how to react in any situation.

2) Sign up sheets are available in the office for Parent/Teacher/Student conferences. ASA is available on both conference days. ASA charges begin at their regular time, 2:45 kg. and 3:45 1st-8th.  Please note that hot lunch will not be available these days; if your child is staying in ASA, please pack a lunch.  All students need to bring a nutritious snack, as well.

3) This week 4th & 5th graders harvested pomegranates from our trees.  They were delivered to Friends in Deed, as part of their service learning mitzvah project.

4) Weizmann has 5/5 star ratings on greatschools.com with 36 reviews. We are the highest rated school in our area!! If you have not done so already, please take a moment to review our school by going to the link below:

P.T.O. News

Dear Parents,

This coming Monday morning, October 22, we will have a table and laptops out at drop off to help you sign up for Escrip!!  Please remember to bring your Vons or Ralphs' grocery cards on Monday so we can help you register - it's an easy way to make money for our school.  We can get this done right then and there before you forget and go about your day.  Escrip is a great way to raise money without costing you a penny.  Most of the funds we raise through Escrip will go towards equipment and other resources for PE, and Mr. Marks has a long list of items he's dying to buy with this money.  So help support our school and PE and bring those cards on Monday.

Thank you,

Noah Golden-Krasner (member of the PTO board and father to second grader Sarai)
