National LMI Updates for June 2016

Employment

The U.S. unemployment rate increased to 4.9 percent for June 2016. Job growth continued in leisure and hospitality, healthcare and social assistance, and financial activities.  
  • Leisure and hospitality added 59,000 jobs in June.
  • Healthcare and social assistance added 58,000 jobs in June.
  • Information jobs increased by 44,000 in June. 
  • Employment in financial activities rose by 16,000 in June and has risen by 163,000 over the year.
  • Employment in professional and business services continued to trend up in June also.
June 2016 average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls edged up 2 cents to $25.61. The average workweek for production and nonsupervisory employees on private nonfarm payrolls remained unchanged at 33.6 hours.

Unemployment 
  • The number of unemployed persons in June 2016 declined by 347,000 now at 7.8 million.
  • In June, the number of job losers and persons who completed temporary jobs rose by 203,000 to 3.8 million.
  • Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult women (4.5 percent) and Whites (4.4 percent) rose in June. The rates for adult men (4.5 percent); teenagers (16.0 percent); Asians (3.5 percent), Blacks (8.6 percent), Hispanics (5.8 percent) showed little or no change.

As part of the TechHire Initiative, Cincinnati is participating in a nation-wide CodeSprint event.  

The Hackathon event is recruiting 15-25 people to actively compete. The target audience includes currently un/under employed individuals who are participating in one of the various intensive training programs (e.g., BootCamps) and high school or college students, as well as anyone self-training, who are interested in IT careers and want to participate.
