Did You Know?

There are categories of workers that often get lost in employment and unemployment statistics.  These workers include individuals who are not employed full time; individuals looking for work; and individuals who stopped looking.  In addition, there are many workers who are underemployed, meaning that there are employees in positions that are insufficient in some important way to the worker, which results in the under-utilization of the individual based on his/her relative education, experience, training or skills.

In April 2016 the number of persons employed part time for economic reasons (also referred to an involuntary part-time workers) was reported at approximately 6.0 million.  These individuals, who would have preferred full-time employment, were working part time because their hours had been cut back or because they were unable to find a full-time job.

In addition, 1.7 million workers were marginally attached to the labor force in April. These individuals were not in the labor force, wanted and were available for work, and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months. Among the marginally attached, there were 568,000 discouraged workers in April.  Discouraged workers are persons not currently looking for work because they believe there are no jobs available for them.

The majority of marginally attached workers (1.1 million) had not searched for work in April for reasons such as school attendance, health reasons or family responsibilities.
