Best 2016 Jobs for High School Graduates

Many young people are choosing not to go to college because of the expense or other barriers.  However, our economy needs them in the labor force. According to PayScale.com and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the most popular jobs for high school graduates are in a variety of industries including healthcare, administrative/clerical, retail, food services, trucking and the military.

Although these jobs have a starting pay range of only $8-$18 per hour, the opportunity to build a career path is doable and the need for workers in these industries continues to grow. As noted in the Top 10 Job Postings in Hamilton County (upper right hand corner of the NewsWIB), there is a high need to fill these types of positions locally.

A recent article in Study.com provides salary and job growth information on potential jobs for 2016 high school grads:
  • Customer Service Reps:  Median pay rate is $14/hour with jobs expected to grow by 10% between 2014-2024
  • Retail Sales Associates:  Median pay rate is $9/hour with 7% predicted job growth between 2014-2024
  • Certified Nursing Assistants:  Median pay rate is $11/hour and as the elderly population grows, so will this career
  • Office Managers:  Median pay rate is $16/hour with an expected 8% employment increase between 2014-2024
  • Administrative Assistants:  Median pay rate is $14/hour and job growth is expected to increase by 3% between 2014-2024
  • Truck Drivers:  Median pay rate is $17/hour with an expected 5% increase in job opportunities between 2014-2024
While these positions may not provide the level of pay that many of today's high school graduates expect, local colleges, career technical centers and training providers offer less costly short-term certifications that lead to promotional opportunities in the above industries.
