From Wartime Experiences to a Lifetime of Leadership

This Week!

Now in its fifth year, Fantasy of Flight's popular Legends & Legacies Symposium Series continues Friday, March 8, and Saturday, March 9, with a brand new event, "Beyond the Battlefield," featuring an elite panel of aviation heroes who will share the wartime experiences and triumphs that prepared them for a life of leadership that lasted well beyond their military careers.

The compelling and historically significant Fifth Annual Legends & Legacies Symposium Series brings to life the experiences of some of America's most courageous aviators through permanent and semi-permanent exhibits, real aircraft, and most importantly, their own personal stories and interactions with guests.

The "Beyond the Battlefield" event will feature several open-forum/question-and-answer sessions as well as meet/greet autograph signings with retired Four-Star General Arthur J. Lichte; Elizabeth "Betty" Wall Strohfus, a member of World War II's Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP); retired Senior Master Sergeant Hal Millett, a World War II and Korean War veteran; and Ron Houston, World War II veteran and member of the British Royal Air Force.

Legends & Legacies events are included in General Admission to Fantasy of Flight.

 Spitfire Mk 16

Annual Inspection Promises
a Return to the Skies

Engine cowling off Spit during annual inspection

In the back of the maintenance hangar, the Spitfire Mk 16 is undergoing a very thorough annual inspection that will return it to full airworthiness, according to Aircraft Department estimates, by sometime this summer. In addition to all the prespecified series of checks, inspections, and tests designated in  FAA document AC43 , the Aircraft Department is using the opportunity to remove several parts that have been attached for a good long spell. In some cases, the parts are less than willing to budge, but the determined mechanics persist because this great aircraft deserves perfection.

Fuselage Jig Construction

Ken Kellett has now devised the jig that will guide the building of the 1914-reproduction Benoist XIV through the construction of its fuselage. And since it is a Flying Boat, this is the nautical element... the part that floats!  Kermit's smile says it all.  And Benoit engine fans, be sure to check out the latest video about the progress of the powerplant..
