| EVERYONE IS WELCOME HERE | | Reserve your seat now for the Y's largest charitable event, the 9th Annual Dinner Auction.
This annual event is organized and run 100% by local volunteers and philanthropists who are dedicated to serving the Northumberland community through the YMCA. All proceeds benefit the Guardian Program which ensures everyone who wants to participate at the Y can, regardless of financial ability.
In 2012 the Northumberland Y awarded 2,222 scholarships totaling $82,000. "The Guardian Program provides opportunity in so many different ways for families," commented Cristian Shirilla, Branch Director. "For some, it provides quality, affordable child care during the summer months. For others, it allows the opportunity to focus on health and well-being. For teens, it provides access to a positive, safe environment. The Y is for youth development. The Guardian Program makes sure there are development opportunities for ALL youth."
Have bid paddle will travel... This year's live auction promises to be the most exciting yet.
With vacation packages covering the globe, you're sure to find an adventure that suits you. Whether you prefer sand between your toes in Myrtle Beach or Kiawah Island, mountain-side adventures in Seven Springs, photos with Minnie and Mickey at Disney World, a week with NASCAR and the Daytona 500, or crossing the pond for an African Safari, there's a little something for everyone.
Reservations are $40 per guest. Call the Y today. 580-8901. |
| SPECIAL THANKS | | |
If you spent time in the pool this summer you certainly noticed a couple changes. The Y would like to thank Mason Brent for his support allowing expansion of the pool deck. Nearly 2,000 sq. ft. of space was added in the project providing, not only more room for children and families, but enough room for games like corn hole and hopscotch. On behalf of the volunteers and members, THANK YOU!
Also new to the pool deck is a permanent public art display. The piece, titled Moving Water, was donated by Mike and Adele Harwood. Their son Matthew Harwood, an artist-in-resident at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA, designed and constructed the piece for one of Alexandia's waterfront parks where it was on display for 6 months. It now adds additional seating and unique character to the Y's outdoor pool. THANK YOU!

| ZUMBA, ZUMBA, ZUMBA | | |
Evening Zumba is back! Beginning Tuesday, August 13, the Y is offering evening Zumba classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 in the Group Exercise Studio.
Instructor Mindy Bowles will be teaching the class. New to the scene, she's excited to help others with their wellness goals through exercise. We think you'll enjoy her enthusiasm for Zumba and fun-loving personality.

| RECOMMENDED READING | | |
What an adventurous summer it has been for many area youth who took part in the Northumberland Public Library's Summer Reading Program. This year's program was a collaborative effort between the Library and the Y.
Thanks to Alice Cooper, Director and Jan Bates, Children's Librarian, the program provided exciting new opportunities to the Y's Summer Day Camp. Twice a week throughout the summer, Y campers visited the library for story time and to check out books, all working toward their summer reading goal of 25 books or 5 chapter books.
Cover to cover, the adventure was non-stop as the two organizations worked together to host 7 weekly educational and entertaining events. Each week an average 120 participants enjoyed magicians, storytellers, artists and performers who all shared a common message...Read, read, read!
The program came to an end July 26 when all children, who had reached their reading goal and attended at least 2 events, enjoyed a pool party and cookout at the Y. A good time was had by all, though we are still awaiting the final results on the watermelon seed spitting contest.
Congratulations to the Library on such a successful and impactful community program! Thank you for inviting the Y to take part and participate. The children had a wonderful time.
If you would like to volunteer with next year's event call the Y at 580-8901 or email northumberland@peninsulaymca.org. Or call the Northumberland Public Library at 804 580 5051.

| THE FALL LINE UP | | |
There's only a couple weeks left in summer. Visit the Y to register your child or grandchild for fall programming. Soccer, Flag Football and Afterschool are all accepting registrations now.
Afterschool
School-age children participate after the school day. The YMCA School-Age program provides an environment where children can easily make friends, be part of a group, meet physical challenges, and know that they are liked, respected and appreciates. The children also participate in 5210 (a health and nutrition program centered around meeting daily goals), homework program, games, free time, character development and lots more fun! Because this is a state-licensed childcare program registration must be completed in person at the Y.
Soccer
Youth Super Sports trained coaches introduce the basic skills and rules of soccer. Dribbling, passing, marking, and shooting at the goal are explored. Good sportsmanship and characterdevelopment are emphasized. Fitness concepts include fitness for the heart, lungs, and muscles, safe play, flexibility, and healthy eating. Ages 3-11. Click here to register or visit the Y. Flag Football Instructional coed class focuses on the basic skills of passing, blocking, kicking, and running for the sport of flag football while working with a YMCA instructor and other children in a structured class setting. This class provides a foundation for growth and the opportunity to further the enjoyment of flag football. Ages 4-7. Click here to register or visit the Y. Call 804 580 8901 or email the Y at northumberland@peninsulaymca.org for questions. |
