| MAKING A DIFFERENCE, POOLSIDE | | |
The YMCA, Red Cross and Northumberland County Public Schools came together again this year to host the 2nd annual School to Pool program. School to Pool is designed to teach 2nd grade students how to swim and be safe around the water. Lead by long-time local swim instructor, Sandy Newsome, a team of 7 certified instructors provided lessons to 107 Northumberland Elementary School students. Each instructor was assisted on deck with additional volunteers lead by Denise Munns, Y Board Member.
Beginning May 13, students were bused to the Y's outdoor pool to receive a 10 minute water safety lesson and 50 minutes of swimming lessons. The program culminated on the last day of school when all participants came to the pool for Fun Day to show off their new swim skills.
"There were students who had never been swimming and were afraid to go under water," said Cristian Shirilla, YMCA Director. "By the end of the program 83% were working on skills beyond level 1. And 100% had comfortably gone under water and had at least experienced the sensation of floating in the water."
Thanks to all instructors, lifeguards, volunteers, school teachers, bus drivers and Red Cross volunteers. And a special thank you to the Dupont Foundation for providing funding for School to Pool to help make our waterfront community safer.

| PLANNING BEGINS FOR 9TH ANNUAL AUCTION | | |
Volunteers gathered at the Northumberland Family YMCA to initiate actions for the 9th Annual Dinner-Auction to raise funds for the Y's Guardian Program. Pictured, from left, are Virginia Mae Barnes, Jim Keller, Sandra Allaun, Shirley Haynie, Mason Brent, Edee Withers, Jim Eury, and Denez Yancey. The Guardian Program provides financial assistance for standard membership and program fees so families and individuals can benefit from the Y's activities. These activities include basic memberships as well as activities such as team sports and summer camps that help children, kids and teens, grow into responsible and successful adults.
This year's Dinner-Auction will be held September 14th, 2013 at Festival Hall in Reedville. It will feature Live and Silent auction items ranging from artwork and crafts to vacation get-a-ways in fabulous locations. The evening will also include a dinner catered by Luna Restaurant of Callao.
If you would like to help with this year's event call 580-8901 or email northumberland@peninsulaymca.org.
