POOL & SPA

SAFETY REMINDER!

Greetings!

Recently we received the following notice from our trade organization, APSP (The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals).

"Yesterday a national recording artist's son nearly drowned in a residential pool.  While the specifics of the incident aren't know at this time, there is some indication it was a limb entrapment due to a missing drain cover."

This serves as an important reminder about safety and entrapment avoidance in pools and spas, particularly residential pools and spas built prior to enactment of the "Virginia Graeme Baker Act" and associated safety standards, which were developed to eliminate this very hazard.  Even adults face entrapment risk if a drain cover is missing, loose, or broken.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is urging those with home pools to have compliant drain covers installed.

The ANSI / APSP-7 Standard allows for several options with regard to existing pools, including drain cover replacement, drain disablement or converting the suction outlet to a return inlet.  Where drains are used, they should be equipped with covers that are certified in compliance as referenced by the federal Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act.

At this time residential pools and spas are not required to meet the safety requirements that public pools throughout the country must meet, however residential pool owners can get the same level of protection for their family and friends.

Any pool with a missing or broken drain cover is at the highest risk for an entrapment incident.  The cost of a new drain cover is approximately $30 - $60 (plus a charge for the labor to install it).

This is a good time for us to emphasize these important safety tips:
  • Never enter a pool or spa that has a loose, broken, or missing suction fitting or drain cover.
  • Immediately notify the pool or spa owner/operator if you find a loose, broken or missing drain cover.
  • Never play or swim near drains or suction fittings.
  • Contact an APSP pool and spa professional to repair and bring the pool or spa into compliance with the ANSI/APSP-7 Standard.
  • Visit the  APSP DRAIN SAFETY LINK  or  Pool Safely  for more information about general drain cover safety and tips.
