Greetings!
ARE YOU LEAVING YOUR POOL BEHIND THIS SUMMER? Don't let your pool feel neglected when you leave on vacation! While you're away, debris and bacteria can collect in your pool and upset the water balance. We want you to come home to clear, inviting water--not a green monster, so please consider our tips. One option, especially if you will be gone for 2 weeks or more, is to call us for VACATION SERVICE. We will come once a week to maintain your pool/spa while you are away. Click Here to contact us and set it up before you leave. If you won't be gone too long, following the tips below will help keep your pool crystal-clear and sparkling until your return:
- Clean your pool thoroughly, brushing and vacuuming walls and floors.
- Test your pool water to make sure it's properly balanced.
- Make sure you have enough chemicals in the water to last until you get back.
- Set your timer to run your pump at least 8 hours per day. When water is in motion, it is harder for bacteria and algae to find a surface on which to grow and the chemicals are more thoroughly distributed.
- Upon your return, bring in a water sample and have our professionals at Redlands Pool & Spa Center perform a water analysis to ensure that your pool is properly balanced and ready for swimming.

Cal's Q & A:
We ran this list last year in our newsletter but still get these questions regularly, so I think it bears repeating (number 7 is new):
- 1. I backwash my D.E. filter regularly. Is that the same as cleaning it? Answer: Yes and no. Backwashing your filter only removes about 60% of the debris in the filter, so if you backwash regularly you should open the filter and clean it at least once per year.
- How do I know when to clean my filter? Answer: Watch your pressure gauge. After you clean your filter, make a note or put a mark on the gauge with a waterproof marker where the needle is when the filter is clean. When the needle increases 5-7 lbs you need to clean your filter. If you have a raised spa that allows the water to spill out when the pool is running you will notice a reduced flow of water as the filter gets dirty, so that is also an indication that it is time.
- Can I drain my pool to the street? Answer: Yes, as long as you make sure the PH is neutral (7.0-7.6) & the chlorine is below 1 PPM
- I have an ozone system on my spa, so I don't use any chemicals in it. The water keeps getting cloudy. Why? Answer: Ozone is a great bacteria fighter but only kills bacteria when the system is running. Most ozone systems only run for several hours per day so we are not getting a 24 hour kill. You will find that if you add a tablespoon of granular chlorine every other day the cloudiness will go away. Or, we have a great product made by BioGuard, called Enhanced Spa Shock. A tablespoon 2-3 times per week keeps the water clear and also helps make it soft. Try it.
- Why does a "salt pool" need more acid? Answer: A salt pool creates chlorine out of the saline solution in your pool. The pH of the chlorine produced is 14 (the ideal range for swimming is 7.2-7.4). Acid is usually needed several times a week to counteract the high pH of chlorine generated from salt. You should be monitoring the pH in your salt pool regularly to avoid high pH problems. Another option is technology now available that continually monitors chlorine and pH in salt pools and adjusts both automatically. Ask our staff if you are interested in more information.
- Why can you use bromine tablets in a spa and not in an outdoor pool? Answer: Bromine is a great disinfectant for pools and spas. The great feature of Bromine is that it's not affected by pH. That means it's a great sanitizer at a pH of 6 or a pH of 8.The only problem with Bromine is that we can not protect it from sunlight. In outdoor pools, sunlight removes it from the water too quickly to make it an effective sanitizer. Spas are usually covered and protected from sunlight.
- When is the best time to run my pool pump in the summer months? Answer: To add a layer of protection for your pool pump, running it late at night or early in the morning is ideal. Motors produce heat when they run, so the added heat of the sun on your motor and/or extremely hot air temperatures may damage an older motor. Additionally, SCE recommends running pool pumps before 12:00 noon to ease power usage during peak times.
