When WWTP's, landfills, and other facilities, have new equipment installed, the machine operators and mechanics usually go through the manufacturer's O & M training class to ensure the equipment is being operated, and maintained, in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. The equipment is selected and designed for each particular application, and the personnel need to understand how to most efficiently run and maintain it. This training is extremely helpful, and it works! I know because I've completed my share of startup training.
The equipment often lasts longer than the individual charged with taking care of it. After 10 - 15 years, the original operators have retired or left for greener pastures. The training is handed down verbally from mechanic to mechanic, with obviously much lost in the translation. Sometimes "John" quits unexpectedly so the next guy has to go through the manufacturers' manual to obtain information regarding operation and maintenance. Again, very much subject to interpretation.
Without formal training for any type of equipment, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to properly operate and maintain the equipment for the most cost effective operation. It is a known fact that training pays. A Harvard study completed many years ago concluded that for every $1.00 in advertising, a company would gain $2.00 in revenue. For every $1.00 spent in training, a company would gain $40.00 in sales revenue! Over the years, I've found that companies with happy good natured employees, very low turnover rates, a clean facility, and well maintained equipment, also have an effective employee training program in place.
Having a good, effective preventative maintenance program in place is a good start. But the personnel need to know how to do the job. Not everyone can read the manual and understand how to complete a job. In fact, most people can't learn that way. A combination of hands-on and classroom training is a good mix.
Proper training will keep equipment running healthier and longer, thus reducing costly repairs and downtime. Invest in operator training, it will save you money!
