Moving Forward

At the September deacons meeting I was very encouraged. Our new deacon year begins in the month of September, and the room was filled with new deacons starting their 3 year term as well as those that have been serving.

Our deacon leadership this year includes 2 men fairly new to Woodmont. Kyle Green will serve as deacon chairman, Neal Whitt as vice chairman, and Mike Mininger as secretary.

Decisions were made to proceed with beginning the process to find a new senior pastor. A letter will be sent out the week of October 5th with information and ballots for all resident church members. A letter outlining our pastor search process and information from our constitution and by-laws on the process will be included.

Our deacon leadership felt strongly that Woodmont needed to be in prayer for our church and this process to find the pastor that the Lord would want to bring to Woodmont to lead our congregation.

The deacons are leading out in several special prayer emphases in the coming days. One is a 24 Hour prayer emphasis scheduled for October 14-15 in the chapel. The prayer time will begin at 8 PM Wednesday night through Thursday night at 8 PM. A deacon or church leader will be present each hour and have some specific guidelines and resources to help lead out and focus on this special prayer time during the hour of prayer. We encourage our church family to sign up and join us in praying for our church. All Sunday school / Bible Study Connection groups are also encouraged to spend time every week in prayer for our church, this interim time, and the pastor search committee.

The deacons are also working on reactivating two important committees in the near future: The Church Counsel and the Long Range Planning Committee. These are important committees that work toward planning, coordinating, and evaluating our church's ministries and looking and planning for the future. Having these committees working and in place when the new pastor arrives will help him and also help our staff and leadership through the interim months ahead.

Under his grace,

Steve

There was a plaque that hung on the wall of my in-laws' basement for many years. It read:

"Lord, I shall be very busy this day. I may forget Thee, but do not Thou forget me."
--Sir Jacob Astley's Prayer before the Battle of Edgehill

I've always remembered that prayer. It's a reminder to me that, in the heat of daily battle, I cannot be trusted to maintain and nurture my relationship with God. I am forgetful, neglectful, distractible, unreliable, untrustworthy, and at times shamefully disloyal. But HE who never slumbers is able to keep ME who tends toward slumbering. He watches, waits patiently, and pays close attention to the minutiae of my being, even while I am oblivious, "checked out," or simply daydreaming. The security of the bond He and I share doesn't depend on me, and for that I am most grateful. It is a disconcerting feeling, on a particularly chaotic day, to suddenly realize that I have not been walking in awareness of the Lord's presence, much less communicating with Him or praising Him. But then, how comforting to find that in my heedlessness, He's been right there all along, thinking about me, holding on to me, carrying me.

I especially relate to Sir Astley as I consider all that is on my "plate" now that summer has ended. It's the Battle of fall regrouping: Youth Choir, Soul Desire, Café Hosanna, Boot Camp, WAFA Recital, Christmas and all that goes with it...and I could go on!

So I find myself praying, "Lord, I shall be very busy this fall. I may forget You, but please don't forget me!"

We had a great time at our R3 Retreat at Natchez Trace in Hohenwald, TN. We had 23 in all to participate. It was a great time of growing closer to God and to each other.

I had the best conversation Wednesday night with some of our guys. As I was teaching in counsel time for AWANA, they asked if they could they tell me a story, "Of course," I said, "after I finish." So after some words of who could tell the story better, one of them starts and says, "One of the guys on our football team told me there is no such thing as God." Then the other guy tells me, "Yes and he rides our bus too, so I told him he needs to watch the movie, '
God's Not Dead'." The young non- believer said, "You made a movie about this? This is so stupid." I have tried over the years to teach our children how to be bold in their faith and how to prove the Bible is true. Our children are going to be bombarded with atheism all around them. A young mother recently told me her daughter's Girl Scout leader is a professing atheist. We had better be on our knees for our children and help them be equipped to defend their faith. This has really been on my heart ever since Wednesday night. Is my heart or your heart prepared to walk with Him in today's world? Romans 12:2 tells us not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Join me as we start our 24 hour prayer time. What will you give up to be in prayer for our children, church, and our country?
