Navigating My Life

I'm not really that used to nautical habits and terms, but I see a real need to stay on course. The currents are always moving, and changing. The winds are harsh, and then they drop to almost nothing. The surrounding sea begins to look the same. It would seem almost impossible to not get confused. Which way is north, and south, and east, and west? Markers and points of information disappear the further you get out. There is no shore line to "stay close to." There is no marker - like a tall building that can be seen. When navigating the sea you need to be equipped and trained.

In life it's just the same. When the markers change... the church changes, or they change the Bible, or our "professors" seem adamant that the ways we've held for years, are not the right ways... it's easy to get confused. When leadership caves to the cultural wave of the moment where does that leave us "followers?" When some who have "stabilized" us in the waves of life are departed to their reward, and we are "on our own" how do we find direction? Today, like never before we need the "wisdom of the ages."

We need to be equipped. We need an anchor. Are you anchored to something (better someone) that cannot, and does not change? Are the strong and stable principles of God's word informing your decisions and moves? When the lights go out and it's dark and you cannot see - can you read the stars? Do you have a directional system that is attached to something more secure and stable than the latest fad? "What's happening now" is all the rave. But what's happening now may be what's happening, but is it right? If it is, then it can become a goal to shoot for; if it is not, then it becomes a looming distraction! You need a map... though the shore line is not visible, it is still there. You need wisdom to know how to hoist the sail and catch the wind, not be capsized by it. You need the experience of a sea captain on board to guide, and coach, and assure you on the journey. Above other things, this captain (the Lord Jesus) will be there to guide. He tells us when we need to head for shore and which direction that is. He tells us when we need to hoist anchor, and when we need to drop one. He tells us how to position the sails to catch the wind. Without a captain, we are directionless, vulnerable to the winds, and powerless to change.

But we have a Captain!  Jesus is our guide.  And in the storm, that's really all we need.

We have a guide. Listen to him - obey Him!

I ran across a verse of scripture this morning that has always made me tremble, as a worship leader, and should cause all of us to stop and self-examine. Isaiah 29:13 reads, "These people come near to Me with their mouth and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. Their worship of Me is made up only of rules taught by men." This is not one of those passages I want to have matted and framed and hung on my office wall, because it's kind of a downer. And yet, how important it is that we worshipers keep these words before us: a sobering reminder to strive for a connection with God that is authentic, fresh, and invigorating.

I'm sure many of you, like me, have attended church all your life. I've never known any other way; my parents saw to that, and I'm forever grateful to them for it. But, as we've all surely learned by now, the grave danger of growing up in God's house is that we can settle in and get too comfy. We make ourselves welcome and assume the run of the place. We come very casually into His presence--I'm not talking about clothing here--and like a hungry youngster home from school, plop down and demand a snack, some entertainment, and maybe even a little nap. We go through the motions that have, over the years, become as natural as breathing. We know the routine so well that we can "do church" without ever engaging our hearts.

Now, lest you think I'm becoming too preachy, here's the good news. God remembers that we are merely flesh (Psalm 78:39), and flesh is notoriously weak when the spirit is willing and even earnest. God knows this. He understands us and is infinitely patient with us.

I don't remember where I read this brutally honest quote--and my Google search proved unfruitful--but someone once said, "I don't love God. I don't even want to love God. But I want to want to love God." I understand that sentiment better than I care to admit, and I've often experienced that feeling of helpless inability to love Him genuinely, to worship Him purely. Sometimes just "wanting to want to love Him" is as close as I can get. What consolation to know that He understands and never hesitates to meet me right where I am.

It is important that we mortals acknowledge this weakness in ourselves. We must confess, to quote a favorite hymn, "Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it..." Do you feel it? I do. Do we "do church" right all the time? No, not even most of the time, in our failed attempts to move from self-centeredness to God-centeredness. But He doesn't give up on us as we are floundering, trying to become better worshipers. His love endures. He simply continues to put that invitation out there: "Come. Seek me." So we don't give up. We keep entering in, with all our imperfection, because the One who has called us is deserving.

The next line in the hymn is, "Here's my heart..." That should be our prayer again and again in worship. Here's my heart, Lord...

Yes, our minds will still wander during sermons. Yes, we will continue absentmindedly to sing devoid of thought or passion. But as we persist in coming before Him, stretching toward authenticity, doing the things we know bring Him honor, every now and then we glimpse His glory in a fresh way. As William Cowper penned in another great hymn: "Sometimes a light surprises the Christian while he sings; It is the Lord who rises with healing in His wings."

Let us enter humbly because we are unworthy, approach boldly because He is worthy, and press on in the imperfect worship of our perfect God. The surprises along the way are worth it.

Children's Ministry

It is so hard to believe another summer is just about to come to a close. I think every year it gets shorter and shorter. In children's ministry we try to fit in as much as possible. We start off with camp, and I know I have said it before, but this year was my favorite. I could not do camp without the Brewers. Lauren and Jonathan make it fun and help me to reinforce showers and bedtime. I appreciate them so much for giving up a week for our children. Then on to basketball camp. This was a first for us, and I must say it was a success. Thank you Donnie McBrayer and Coach Champagne for a great day of camp. Then right into VBS. What a week. We had 9 decisions to accept Christ as personal Savior.

July  was extremely busy. We took a trip to Point Mallard. I want to say thank you to our parents that go and help chaperon. It was a hot day, but then it always seems to storm as soon   as we leave, thank you Lord. We had our Princess party with 24 little princesses and one beautiful Princess Sophia. We talked about how we all are God's princess and He (Jesus) is our Prince.

I cannot leave the boys out. We had a
Super Hero party. We had hulk juice and a drive-in movie with Big Hero 6. Of course, there was an appearance from Spider man.

I don't know about you but I am tired! God is faithful and blessed us all this summer. Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your children's lives.

Singles Ministry

The Single Parent Family group just returned from the annual beach retreat at Orange Beach. 31 people enjoyed the beauty of God's creation at the beach, and as usual there was one family who had never been to the beach. I greatly appreciate all the help from the Single Parent class teachers and wives, James and Latricia Hensley, and Dee and Sandy O'Steen. They always go above and beyond!
While we were there we got together for a group meal and devotion each day. This is always a special time to be together. The kids love the singing as well as the sharing time. This year, we all focused on learning a verse: For it is the God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness who has shown in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6.
