From the Pastor

They Chose Barabbas

Amazing isn't it? When given the choice they chose an insurrectionist and the Son of Man died. Was it the pressure? Did they feel that if they didn't crucify Jesus the High Priests would be mad at them? Did they feel Jesus was a "nobody?" Who cares what happens to Him?Could they not know who He was and what He did? I'm not really sure why they chose Barabbas.

But, it does seem like human nature doesn't it? When faced with a choice, and we have them every day, we choose the easy way. We choose to blame others. We choose to "let someone else." We choose to not get involved vs. get involved. We choose to crucify / sacrifice someone else and not take responsibility to do the right thing ourselves. It's human nature, and when I see human nature, I know why I need saving.

Human nature influences us all to do the wrong thing. We have within us a fleshly side. On TV they call it our dark side. It's the side that not only likes to see violence; it can come to crave it. It's the side that enjoys watching other people engage in filthy and unwholesome sexual activities. It's the side that likes, even lusts after things... and passes over people. The selfish side of us focuses on "me."  It's all about me. I will say, however, that following a "me" mentality never results in happiness. It was Jesus who said, "men love darkness rather than light.... because their deeds are evil."

So, we need "saving." We need saving from ourselves. So Jesus died for us. He knew the truth. He knew we are sinful. We think sinful, we meditate on ourselves. We need Jesus! By His sacrificial death on the cross - He frees us from ourselves. Now we have freedom to make a valid choice. And, not only that, but He is there with us to help us make that choice and live that lifestyle.

And so... we're free! We don't have to yield ourselves to unrighteousness; we may do the right thing. So, I'm praying for you as you make your own choices. Kind of like between Barabbas and Jesus. You're free now.

I'm praying for you and your choices,

Jerry Rea

As our country continues to question Biblical and moral teachings, the statistics highlighted below help reveal why.

Reese's Pieces

I got word this morning that one of my former youth choir/ensemble members (from a previous church) lost her battle with leukemia last night. This has knocked the breath out of my lungs, as these things do, and I've been sitting here numb, wondering what I could possibly say to console her family. Words are never more inadequate or more difficult to find than when someone so young is taken from us. And attempting to understand the why isn't even an option.

I've had more than my share of loved ones lose their battle, and I have come to accept the reality, as we all eventually must, that someday, if Jesus has not yet returned, so will I. This is precisely why Easter is such a treasure. It reminds me that the battle lost is only for this life...not the next.

"If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied." (1 Cor. 15:19)

Christ won His conflict with death, then mercifully and generously gathered us in and made His victory ours. Because He lives I can face tomorrow, even if tomorrow is my dying day, because death has been disarmed and discredited and now serves as nothing more than a doorway. Waiting just over the threshold are peace, rest, perfect love, and the rebirth our spirits have longed for, groaned for, since our first breath. Once again, and for a different reason altogether, I find myself without words.

We often talk about what God has given us, as well we should. But Easter also illuminates the things He takes away. This Sunday, those of us in the music ministry are going to put forth our best effort to rejoice and lift up the Lamb Who takes away our sin, our disgrace, our defeat, our hopelessness, and even our fear of dying. Is that a celebration you can get behind? Please join us. Help spread the word. Invite someone. Let's crown Him the Lord of life who triumphed over the grave. Long live the King!

Hess's Headlines

Dear Church,

Tyler, Texas. Some of you might be familiar with this city. Tyler is famous for its roses and home NFL running back, the Tyler Rose, Earl Campbell. However, I am praying that Tyler, Texas would become famous for something different. A ministry called "Gospel Village" (www.gospelvillage.com) and one of our former college students is now working there. Gospel Village is a ministry that "exists to connect God's people from local area churches with students from local area schools in mutually transforming mentoring relationships." Simply put, the elementary schools identify at risk students or students from broken homes and the churches send volunteers to fill voids in the young child's life. However, what amazes me most about the ministry is the fact that it is intentional to share the gospel of Jesus AND live the gospel of Jesus.

Imagine for a moment that racial divisions were erased, and the only kingdom that a person witnessed to was the Kingdom of God. Imagine for a moment that area churches would work together to change the community. Imagine for a second that socio-economic lines were invisible, and that only the riches in Heaven mattered. Imagine what it would look like when people from different churches would stand together as mentors to students from the same school. This is what our college group had the chance to see this past week. The Lord allowed us to see the ministry in all different areas. Our students were able to serve the mentors at an appreciation dinner the first night. It is here we watched representatives from fourteen churches stand together sharing stories about their mentoring relationships. It is also here that we heard how this ministry started with a clear vision: let's reach the future and quit holding so tightly to the past. The next day we cleaned some of the area at the Boys and Girls Club of East Texas; Gospel Village is now under the umbrella of Boys and Girls Club. It is here where we learned about their summer camp for the community. It is also here that we heard story after story and saw picture after picture of lives the Lord has changed through that camp. Later we served at an after school care through Boys and Girls Club. Our students played games, created art projects, and even engaged in a soccer match! Through every aspect, the gospel was shared. Finally we had the opportunity to sit in on a training session for new mentors. It is here where I started asking the question: Why just Tyler, Texas?  Why not Florence, Alabama?

The Lord has blessed us with an incredible opportunity as God's people to reach out and provide tangible help toward eternal hope. Are kids different in Tyler, Texas than they are in Florence, Alabama?  Not that different. After all, they need love and they need Jesus. Good news, I know some people who could provide both!  Would you be willing?

In Christ,

It was during the time that Tony's dad's health was on the decline that someone remarked to Tony, "how can you smile and laugh?" His answer to them was, "because I know without a doubt that my dad is on his way to Heaven, and I can smile because this is not the end for me." It is so hard for someone that never experienced God's love and mercy to know the joy we have in Him. Sure we are sad because we do not have him here to tell us crazy stories or yell, "blood and guts" when you want to save your seat. It got us to thinking about our legacy. What will they say about us at our funeral? Will it be a celebration of our life and how we showed God's love to everyone?

Even when you think you are too old to be helping teach children or rock a baby...just think you may be the one that gets to lead them to the Lord.

Easter is coming up, and it is a special time of thinking about what the Lord has done for each of us. Not only that, but Easter was when my husband to be at the time accepted the Lord and became the best husband and man of God I could ask for. I pray if you do not know the Lord, you will not wait another day. Find someone to talk to because the Lord is waiting with outstretched arms.
