From the Pastor

Like Sparks

Marjorie Holmes says that words of encouragement are like "sparks" that may catch fire and lead to deeds of kindness and love. Small contributions serve to ignite great and grand achievements. What starts out almost minuscule ends up in a mountain of good.

If we were to build a church, it would take millions of small, humble, unnamed words and deeds. It would take hundreds (maybe even thousands) of small pieces of lumber, mortar, and actions. But like fire, our deeds "catch" and we reach our goal. So the moral of the story is, don't look down on giving words of encouragement. They are the sparks from which great bonfires grow.

So... today, use your words to start great fires! Remembering that what seems small to you may be big to someone else. Use your time, as an investment in others, and in His kingdom, again remembering that small investments lead to huge returns. Build up others, remembering that it's not the big acts that keep us moving and help us make life's turns, it's the small ones. Someone asked me once, do you pray about the small things? Of course I do! If it weren't for the small things, I'd have nothing to pray about. Our lives, after all, are a series of small things. Our days are small things tacked together. Our work (in the big picture) is a small thing.

Now, remember this! God does not necessarily want us to do big things. He takes the small (like the loaves and fishes) and blesses them. And in the process God gets the glory, not the person.

I love you,

Jerry Rea

Hess's Headlines

Dear Church,

The following is an excerpt from

Jesus Freaks, a book that compiles stories of Christian martyrs:

"'Thomas,' his friend lowered his voice so as not to be heard by the guard. 'I have to ask you this favor. I need to know if what the others say about the grace of God is true. Tomorrow, when they burn you at the stake, if the pain is tolerable and your mind is still at peace, lift your hands above your head. Do it right before you die. Thomas, I have to know.'

Thomas Hauker whispered to his friend, 'I will.'

The next morning, Hauker was bound to the stake and the fire was lit. The fire burned a long time, but Hauker remained motionless. His skin was burnt to a crisp and his fingers were gone. Everyone watching supposes he was dead. Suddenly, miraculously, Hauker lifted his hands, still on fire, over his head. He reached them up to the living God, and then, with great rejoicing, clapped them together three times.

The people there broke into shouts of praise and applause. Hauker's friend had his answer."

Thomas Hauker was burned at the stake in 1555 in England. There are several things that we need to realize from this story. First of all, the grace of God is incredible, timely, and powerful.  2 Corinthians 12:9-10 says, "But he said to me,"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." The second thing to realize is that God can use anything to advance the Kingdom, even when His believers are murdered. The news in the past weeks has been covering the killing of Christians around the world, but know that the Gospel is worth dying for and God uses that to convict and encourage others. Revelation 12:11 says,"They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death." The world was not worthy of Thomas Hauker, nor the 21 other Christians that were killed by ISIS last week. Finally, let's refrain from acting as if or saying we have been "persecuted" recently when in reality we were just inconvenienced.  Be careful, we have a tendency to be spoiled.

I have heard it said a 1000 times lately I'm ready for Spring! Well I am too, but what does Spring actually mean? Spring to me means extended daylight time with the time change. Baseball begins, and hibernating bugs emerge. I get excited when it is time to wear my sandals. This is my favorite time of the year. Of course the most popular is spring cleaning. As I am thinking about spring cleaning, I think about what do I need to clean up in my own life. How is my  prayer life, my compassion for others, have I rid myself of toxins that are not good for me? Kids camps, Vacation Bible School, all the extra outside activities we could cram into a few weeks of summer. These are a few of my favorite things that I could break into song right now!

I loved the compassion and care our 1st through 3rd graders showed as they worked on cards for someone they did not know, and may never know. So particular in everything being just right, no the spelling is not always correct, but would you have it any other way, NO! They try and do a ministry project once a month and I truly enjoy seeing their love for others.

The Moonlight & Roses Valentine's Dinner was a very special occasion. Everyone enjoyed a delicious steak dinner and great fellowship. "Name that Tune" was so much fun and everyone really got into trying to guess the songs. David Hope, emcee for the game, and Kevin Reese, the piano man, provided lots of fun and laughs.

Kevin and Corinne Reese entertained the crowd with some great music. Bro. Steve ended the evening with a few uplifting words.
Special thanks to the Family Life team for all the effort and especially to Cathie Hope for the beautiful decorations.

Dear Woodmont family,

I would like to thank you so much for giving me the privilege of serving you here for the last 20 years. The experience has been a huge blessing and an amazing adventure. I never would have imagined in my wildest dreams that the Lord would redeem my life, and even use me in ministry. He is truly a God of grace and mercy. Philippians 4:13 has proven to be true in my life, it says, "We can do all things through Christ who gives us strength." Danny and I greatly appreciate all the love and support you have shown to us.

Thank you for the generous love offering!

We love our precious Woodmont  family!
