From the Pastor

Step Out!

Moses wanted to lead them out, but they had to be willing to be "saved." They had to put great faith in this "outside" leader. Remember, when they left, they followed him straight out into the desert.  They must have had faith in God, but also in God's leader. To be delivered meant to be free, but it also meant to demonstrate faith. Maybe God gave them a special portion of faith for that moment. Maybe they were so desperate they'd follow anyone to get out (In Hitler's Germany, I think they got desperate and followed him.) But step out they did. And when they stepped out, God took it from there.

God may want you to "step out." Everyone you know may be into a sinful lifestyle; for you "stepping out" means to leave others and their lifestyle behind. God may want you to "step out" and share your faith. For you "stepping out" is to strike up a conversation with someone, with the express end being to share how Jesus has changed your life. God may have asked you to teach, serve as a deacon, or serve as a leader at some Christian organization at work/ school; for you to step out means you are in territory you don't understand, or it feels a bit awkward.

But,step out we must. Peter asked Jesus if he could come to Him. Jesus said "come on" (my translation). So what does Peter do? He steps out!  And just for a moment (until he became afraid) HE WALKED ON WATER. That would be the faith walk. And, I perceive it to be the way we are to live our entire lives. By Faith! So, today Step out in Faith."

This Sunday, August 3 at 9:00 AM we will begin our new Bible Study Connection Classes. We need everyone to join us in starting the Bible Study year off right. Make plans to be here.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men..." Col. 3:23

When, all too often, I find myself tempted to give half-hearted effort to some daily task, merely "phoning it in" as they say, God gently reminds me of this verse. There is a reason that it's on my mind this morning.

Last night we wrapped the 2014 Soul Desire season with a homecoming concert for our church family and friends. Each year, this ministry is the culmination of months of hard work on the part of all involved: from the audition/selection process to finding and assigning the right songs to the right voices, from writing the vocal arrangements to hours of rehearsing and memorizing those arrangements, from tons of phone calls to churches, malls, and hotels to setting up, tearing down, loading and unloading sound equipment in those very same places...and then doing it all over again.

One of the things I try to impress upon these students is the importance of pursuing excellence. This doesn't always win me popularity points as I crack the proverbial whip requiring unyielding faithfulness to rehearsals and the seemingly endless repetition of vocal exercises. But all group members seem to consider the final result worthy of their investment. Tight harmonies are not slapped together at the last minute...especially among nine individuals, each holding his or her very own microphone which amplifies every little glitch, every imperfection. A successful outcome necessitates the pursuit of excellence!

We followers of Jesus, above all people, should highly esteem excellence in our work (and in our play, for that matter). Why? Because we do not do what we do--whatever it is--for men. We do what we do for the Lord.

If Jesus built a ship,

She would travel trim;

If Jesus roofed a barn,

No leaks would be left by Him.

If Jesus planted a garden,

He would make it like Paradise;

If Jesus did my day's work,

It would delight His Father's eyes.

Hess's Headlines

Dear Church,

Do you remember running away from home when you were younger? I sure do. I remember thinking that my parents were mean and did not know what they were doing. I would gather up a few of my most prized possessions: a change of clothes, a couple of cokes, and a Michael Jordan basketball card. I thought I could live the rest of my life with these small items. However, an hour would pass and I would start to realize some things: I forgot to grab a different pair of shoes, I didn't want to damage my Michael Jordan card, and I drank the two cokes too fast, causing me to feel nauseous. Then it would hit; the truth of the moment would come crashing in: I had nowhere to go. I had no shelter, had no real food, and could not get a job. Suddenly, in a moment of clarity, I would realize all of the things my parents did, and I could not help but to appreciate them and love them. I would come back home, with tears in my eyes, and my parents would welcome me back every time.

This happened to me recently. I didn't run away, but I needed to be away for a time to serve the Lord. I had all the things I thought I would need. I thought I had prepared for my journeys mentally and emotionally better than I did as a young child. However, I was wrong. Over the past few weeks I have had the opportunity to be involved with several different ministries. We were with Building Believers in Christ in Guatemala, Mission Fuge Camp in Ridgecrest, North Carolina, World Changers here in Florence, and Super Summer in Talladega. I was surrounded by people, church groups, and a lot of people. Just like when I was younger, I found myself missing home. During the weeks I was away, I found myself missing Woodmont and discovering many ways in which I appreciate you all.

As I served alongside our youth in Guatemala, I was so thankful for a church home that would send their youth to all the nations in order to share the Gospel. While we were in North Carolina I was surrounded by other teenagers from around the country. During this time I was praising God for all the wonderful students the Lord has blessed us with here at Woodmont.
Perhaps the most eye-opening week was World Changers in Florence. I did not have the opportunity to work at the church, but instead went to all the different ministry sites in Florence. It was during this time that I saw our church in action: the countless volunteers from our church in the school kitchen serving each of the World Changers breakfast and dinner or delivering lunches; the volunteers from our church driving the buses to get World Changer teams where they needed to be. But what gripped me most were the stories along the way. As I would visit homes that were being worked on, I would listen to people talk about how Woodmont helped them with their utilities or with food or a variety of other issues. Some adult leaders would come back and tell stories of people talking about Woodmont serving in the community.
Finally, I served in Talladega at a discipleship camp called Super Summer. This camp focused on teaching students sound doctrine and apologetics.  Once again I was thankful for Woodmont who invests in the next generation of the church and teaches these things to the congregation.

So, after weeks of travel and hard work, I am so thankful to be home, serving you and serving alongside you in ministry. I am thankful for you and what the Lord has done with this church. Woodmont is not perfect, but I am thankful the Lord has used this church in our community and around the world. Thank you for allowing me to be here, and to be gone, and to be here again!

Singles Ministry

The Single Parent Families recently enjoyed a great time at the beach. The Lord watched over us for sure as everyone was safe, even when we had a tire on each bus to blow out. One of the kids told me this beach trip was the best part of his summer. During the devotion times we sang and shared favorite verses and talked about how God had revealed himself to us each day. It is always so interesting to see the way the Lord works in the group He brings together and the new friendships that are developed and old ones that are strengthened.
